What do you think of when you think of ESSEX?

I truly feel the pain whenever I try to say "naranja" in a Spanish speaking country though.
I feel just so WHITE whenever I try to order anything at a Mexican restaurant

I think I’ve also had an American waitress unable to understand “water” even when I said it in RP, so I just said “WAAAADER” in my best nasal Californian impression and that was apparently fine
We had the same when trying to get a cab to an address Sutter St in San Francisco. I must have asked about 5 times before showing the address written down. Then it was 'Oh, SUDDA!'

English words endings with -r are always hard to pronounce and to understand the way you English do it. It’s much easier in American (or Irish, Scottish…)
You'd be fine in parts of England. Particularly the South West.

Oh really? Like Cornawall and Devonshire? My only association to the latter is that it was where many Agatha Christie’s stories usually took place.

We say suger but it’s more sugeh because everything scouse has to be open ended or trail off into an exclamation of phlegm

I need to alert @Zu 2 to this topic. I expect she has some fond memories of Romford Market.

Yes, I bought all my up to the minute fashions in C&A which was next to the market :disco:

Also I once saw someone in the toilet facilities near WHSmith who had a HOOK instead of a hand :horny:
Abu Hamza?

It really is quite the miracle that I became this erudite urban sophisticate who can pronounce the word Hermès when you look at where I grew up :)

I'm now stuck on a Hamlets in Essex wiki loop. It really swings from stunning and historical to tragic decay.

Still got a post office though, not everywhere can say that :disco:

I must say, I had a VERY charming wander around Chelmsford town centre last weekend with ButterTart completely alone - lovely SHOPS

I was quite SHOCKED how nice Chelmsford was when I visited.

Oh well it's in the nice part of Essex. It's mainly when you enter the south eastern part of the county that it gets grubby. Also the seaside resorts OBVIOUSLY

I always think Chelmsford as the gateway between the two sides of Essex. The more southern you get, the less likely you are to say words proper.

Lovely Peter Pan's Playground in Southend was always very popular with children as well as gentlemen keen to proffer their throbbing gristle in the lavatories (and on the RIDES)
