2024 US Presidential Election

Watch that video.
If you base your opinions on that video, you're likely someone who prefers orators to stick to scripted speeches. Anyone who regularly chooses to go off-script will inevitably have those kinds of gaffes.

Audiences who value authenticity over correctness will often overlook contradictions and inaccuracies in that type of conversational speaking, as long as the overall message is either entertaining or somewhat clear.

Yeah I'm aware of how populists create mass appeal through their public speaking, but why are you choosing to die on this hill?

I'd rather watch the edits of his worst bits, because they're more fun than the supposed "excellent public speaking" because that's full of hate fuelled, racist, misogynistic, transphobic misinformation and bile. Aside from that there's a big percentage of absolute rambling garbage that leaves the crowd silent, but it's rarely shown, for obvious reasons. I wouldn't consider that to be "excellent".

If you consider all that to be excellent than perhaps you need to reconsider your username.

Authenticity is not something I would say Trump possesses. He just says what his rabid audience want to hear - he even said it to their faces!

When I talk about authenticity, I mean that people can tell it's genuinely Trump's own words and thought process, not something shaped by a coach or speechwriter.

But they're rarely if never excellent.

I concede I may be hanging onto this one word and it might be a language difference.

I think it’s insane to deny Trump’s public speaking isn’t quite singular and a huge part of his appeal, even when what he is saying is weird and off-putting, the way he says it is obviously somewhat captivating, to the extent close to 50% of voters are behind him despite what he says being batshit and lacking in ANY SUBSTANCE. He’s clearly mentally declined but to deny his obvious showmanship and the power of his speaking is crazy to me. Especially when it’s clearly a massive part of his success? If it doesn’t appeal to you that’s fine, it’s not meant to appeal to you!

If you strip away all of Trump’s charisma and charm you’re left with JD Vance. Their values are disturbing and off-putting, only Trump is capable of selling them. When he dies in the next 5-10 years the Republican Party is dead.

Junior's attempt to emulate his Dad will be very entertaining to watch

Trump is not in any way a talented speaker. There is no charisma or substance whatsoever. He just learnt a long time ago the empty but wholly effective method of telling people what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. Populism is the opposite of the inconvenient truth; he says whatever will get him a cheer or applause, whether it’s true or not, will happen or not, is damaging or not. Anyone can do what he does, it’s actually very easy to be a hard right cunt, we know this because he actually isnt one, he just cosplays one because he wants to be liked and wants power and has found the eaiest way to do it.

Telling people what they already want to know is not a talent. It’s cheap heat. It’s an easy pay day. It’s carny entertainment in the worst way.

Populism isn't inherently deceptive. Populist messages can still be true and relevant. And emotional rhetoric is definitely an important part of leadership and doesn't always equate to demagoguery. The problem with Trump is he's a populist LIAR. That's his talent. He's good at making lies popular. And YES that is a talent.

I'm no Kamala stan either. I don't think she's a sufficient candidate either. But because she's just shit with an abysmal legislative record. Not because her character is rotten (that I know of).

You say that, yet US politics is filled with populist politicians telling people what they want to hear. Still, in this century, I can't think of anyone more effective at it than Trump.

Who would you vote for this election if you were an American citizen?

However, based on the rhetoric in this forum, I'm starting to believe that Nicole Shanahan, whom I had never even heard of before @VoR's hilarious video, might actually be on to something.

Yes but Trump does it in the simplest way possible and targets the dumbest audience possible. That doesn’t make him impressive. Resourceful yes, unscrupulous yes.

They all say nice empty things about hope and freedom because that’s the American way, but the left choose to talk about policies and then get criticised (quite rightly) when their policies lack substance or tangibility. Trump just says a load of nothing peppered with a few insults, bad jokes and a bit of fear mongering to keep the audience engaged.

It’s a clever strategy, but not one that should ever be applauded or celebrated.

So here’s a scary but plausible scenario for November. Trump and the Republicans are throwing virtually every penny they have on flipping just two states - Georgia & Pennsylvania.

In other news a major US right-wing influencer network has been busted for taking tens of millions of dollars to basically serve as a Russian media mouthpiece.

If only there’d been some kind of clue, a tiny hint…

I was reading about this last night, it’s absolutely insane.

Trump would only need to be handed a rumour and he would make his entire campaign about something like this. But when it’s against the democrats, not a peep.

I’m just gonna fly to Greece and they’ll have to cover the cost of my childcare

I hope in the debate they really press upon asking for SPECIFIC examples of policies they intend to renew or update. Kamala might stumble but Trump will absolutely set himself on fire.

The debate pretty much hinges on whether they push for specifics or whether Trump is allowed to talk in his blue sky nonsense with some insults thrown in.
