Judy Cheeks - Reach b/w Can't Get Enough (1994)

UK chart peak - Number 17

20250321_123317.jpg

Another GOSPEL TINGED trip to the DANCEFLOOR. Considering I also really liked "I Believe" by God-bothering choir Sounds Of Blackness at this time too, I must have INADVERTENTLY gone through a brief PIOUS PHASE in early 1994.

Judy Cheeks (yes that's her real name) was already 40 when this single was released. I'd always lumped her in with the other YOUTHFUL dance divas like CeCe Peniston, but apparently she'd been releasing soul & R&B stuff since the early 70s to LITTLE FANFARE. I've no idea what might have inspired the CHANGE OF DIRECTION or why a few singles like this took off in comparison to the rest of her material, unless she decided to jump on the bandwagon with CeCe & co, & this time struck luckier with producers & songs.

This was Judy's second UK hit after "So In Love (The Real Deal)" in late 1993 & treads similar ground. It's got a more frenetic pace, with its shrieks of "REACH" throughout, typically mid 90s housey piano stabs, & OUR JUDE in fine voice TAKING IT TO CHURCH during the verses (which I actually prefer to the chorus - they're much more SOULFUL). It's a decent little dance tune, but I can also see why it CAME & WENT because it's nothing we haven't heard done before & better. I like it, but I don't LIVE FOR IT. Rather like Degrees Of Motion, the lyrics could also be about LURVE TO GOD or maybe just about some HOT COCK (or BOTH if you're Amy Grant).

B side "Can't Get Enough" is, I imagine, rather more TYPICAL of Judy's prior OUTPUT, it's a slower paced, reflective ballad that's also got a very NOTABLE gospel influence. Again, she sings it JUST FINE & it's not a bad tune but it just doesn't stand out at all. If this is the sort of music Judy Cheeks has put out over the years, I can see why she's never took off & had a true SMASH HIT. She's a passable but ultimately derivative artist on the strength of these 2 songs (but hey, I could be wrong. I've never felt the desire to listen further).

Judy charted a couple of further minor hits, with a remix of "Reach" giving her a final top 30 hit in 1996, although I've no recollection of this re-release. At 71, she appears to still be active & still releasing music, but sadly I think that hoped for BIG BREAKOUT MOMENT ended when "Reach" departed the charts.

I've just searched Judy Cheeks & not only does she have a dedicated topic in the Gayers forum but this old post raised a CHORTLE:

I've just seen some of the tags in this thread - "Judy Cheeks bucket fanny" is my favourite! :D

Amy Grant - Baby Baby (No Getting Over You Mix) b/w Lead Me On (1991)

"Baby Baby" in its original US mix, to be fair to Joe, doesn't sound QUITE RIGHT. It's just a little bit too ORDINARY POP SONG (although that didn't stop it racing to Number 1 ACROSS THE POND). This European remix was produced by someone called Daniel Abraham (nope, me neither) & gives the song just what it needs - an extra bit of OOMPH on the instrumentation & a teeny extra edge - well as much EDGE as can be given to an artist as WHITE BREAD as Amy Grant :D
I understand we are talking about the Not getting over you remix, right? Not sure why you call it the UK remix, because this version was actually played in many US radio stations as the main version, even when the most popular one in USA was the album version, that is also the 45 version. I don't like the remix much, probably because I was used to the album version.

Correct. I always thought this was a UK only mix & the album version was released in the USA.

Curtis Stigers - I Wonder Why b/w Nobody Loves You Like I Do (1992)

UK chart peak - Number 5
A total one hit wonder in America, that unexpectedly did much better in the Europe. And not ony Europe, back in the day he was paid a fortune by those rich Arabs to play private concerts in Dubai or whatever they were. Not bad for someone with such a short career. I quite like his 2 big hits.

It was definitely released in America. I had US Armed Forces Radio at home (thanks NATO) and they usually played the album version, but they had this other big top 40 countdown and they played the remix. But yes, the UK market was probably the idea behind the remix.

Don-E - Love Makes The World Go Round b/w Mystery (1992)

UK chart peak - Number 18

20250321_163545.jpg

From his musical SELECTIONS on the other thread, I suspect only @funky may already be aware of Don-E, & will possibly be the only poster with any interest in this one. Which is a crying shame, as not only is it a quality forgotten pop/R&B old school HYBRID, but Don-E himself might be one of the best LOST UK SOUL STARS, cruelly ignored outside of this one minor hit. Also, he's QUITE FIT & I DO WISH I was that guitar on the cover. But anyway...

"Love Makes The World Go Round" reminds me strongly of a male version of the :disco:Alison Limerick single from the same time, "Make It On My Own". They both belong to a subgenre of upbeat pop/soul/dance fusions at that point, all of which I love (I suspect you could also include the much maligned Kenny Thomas under this UMBRELLA too). It's catchy, perky, summery as hell, so in the first of many DUMBASS record company decisions involving Don-E, they released it in May instead. What they SHOULD have done is released the more CHILLED follow-up, "Peace In The World" first as a TASTER, then gone for the obvious summer hit with this in July. I can easily see it slotting into the top 10 that summer with the likes of "The Best Things In Life Are Free". Sometimes I think I've missed my VOCATION & should be working in record company marketing & A&R.

"Peace In The World" peaked at the frustrating #41 spot instead, & I read an interview with Don-E that it was on its way to the top 40 but thanks to some record company SHENANIGANS (illegal marketing or funny buying patterns or something) its sales were reduced, it missed the top 40, & Don-E's solo career swiftly descended towards the dumper thereafter, with both the accompanying album & its 1995 follow-up flopping.

His only other chart appearance was in 1998 as a guest vocalist on a duet with Aussie singer Deni Hines, "Delicious", which I'll post here for @funky as I suspect its 70s soul vibes will be RIGHT UP HIS STREET (it reminds me strongly of "Nothing Really Matters" by Lauryn Hill & D'Angelo). I vaguely remember Deni featuring in the teen magazines at the time & she had a few minor top 40 singles, & if this is typical of her music, I may well explore further (@Marilyn I don't know if you know her or anything about her at all?)

B side "Mystery" is another chill out tune that's strongly reminiscent of Don-E's peer, Omar, & again showcases his all around singing, songwriting & producing talent. That's been what he's concentrated on in the years since, with the odd solo project here & there. A glance at his Wikipedia reveals a WHO'S WHO of celeb collaborators from Grace Jones to the Sugababes, & he seems to be a hugely respected figure on the UK soul scene despite his limited commercial success. He stands as a PRIME EXAMPLE of how a record company can COCK UP a promising fledgling career. I think we were robbed of some great & interesting stuff.

Deni and Marcia Hines are Australia's answer to SINITTA and MIQUEL BROWN. Possibly

I know that Don-E song from the Morales Mix - I haven’t heard that in YEARS.

Do I ever! She's an icon of briefly successful Australian 90s pop stars

Her mum Marcia is a genuine pop legend here, one of the most successful female artists of the 70s, who continued to have occasional charting singles right through to 2006 (the final one was a Deni duet)

Deni started out as a frequent guest vocalist for the Rockmelons and they had 3 hits together in 91-92, including this slightly overplayed 90s radio staple

Her debut album Imagination followed in 96, and as part of my aunt's collection, it was one of the few CDs I had available to me at the very beginning of my journey as a music fan, so I'll always have a special place for it even if it's not a classic by any means

These were the major standouts, not coincidentally all singles:

It's Alright went top 5 and won an ARIA but beyond that she struggled. There was a reissue, a remix album, and a greatest hits (!) before she even got to her second album, which wouldn't come until 2006.

Some later Deni highlights include this Grace Jones cover, her only post-96 appearance in the top 40:

The highly quotable (if you're me or one of my 3 friends who know this song exists) FRENZY:

And the title track from her 2nd album:

As with many local stars, if you looked only at chart positions you'd think they weren't very famous at all (this can arguably be applied to Marcia too, beyond her major classiques) but Deni is still pretty well known despite only having a handful of actual hits to her name. If she wasn't Marcia's daughter she might not have been able to stretch her fame very far but she did well enough in theatre and on reality TV (DWTS, Masked Singer, Celeb Apprentice) to remain in the public eye far beyond her initial success.

Not to end my post on a downer but I can't not mention my "favourite" random Deni moment which was when she said that one of our most revolting far-right politicians was actually quite nice after they appeared on Celebrity Apprentice together

I'll let it go as a moment of madness because of the 4-6 bops she gave us

Positive Gang - Sweet Freedom (Part 2: The Return b/w Part 1: The Original) (1993)

UK chart peak - Number 67

20250322_101455.jpg

Blame @dmlaw for this one after encouraging me to splurge a fiver on it a few weeks ago off E-Bay after reviewing the original. I'd always wanted to hear it & it's one of a handful of songs I can find NO TRACE OF on the Internet.

It's not really a "Part 2" at all of course, but PWL MAINSTAY, & one-time Kylie collaborator, Tony King, has been handed it to work a bit of SAW (or SW at this point) remix magic on to try & squeeze out a bigger hit this time - they clearly must have expected better things from the original (helpfully included on the flip side as a COMPARISON). It takes the best funky 80s Casio keyboard sounds from the original, adds in a current Culture Beat style dance backing, & wisely pushes the chanting female vocals to the FOREFRONT. Add in someone's actually chanting the REFRAIN of "Sweet Freedom" over it this time around, & in a dance loving 1993 (& shortly before Doop took a similar novelty dance number all the way to Number 1), you'd think this time they'd be landing in the top 20 for sure.

BUT NO. I was about the closest thing to a Positive Gang FAN at the time, having bought the original, but could never find a copy of it anywhere. No signs of promotion either - I don't think it even showed up on the ITV chart show, & if there was a video, I've never seen it. The only reason I knew it existed was a 4 star review in Smash Hits. It flopped & we never heard from songwriter G. Lanzini & the Gang again.

It was only when I put this review together that I thought of an actual reason why PWL just didn't seem to BOTHER with it in the end - I've not gotten anywhere near this point in the SAW podcast just yet, but didn't Mike Stock leave PWL in mid 1993 (for reasons I've never been sure of)? I wondered if the promo of this single got thrown by the WAYSIDE in the upheaval of him going. It'd certainly make sense.

To which I again IMPLORE to G. Lanzini & the rest of the group - please find this thread & join us on Moopy! I'd like to be REGALED with tales of writing minor Eurodance hits & what it was like during the fall of Rome-esque COLLAPSE of the PWL EMPIRE in 1993.

That's just NOT TRUE. Damn you youtube for getting me to listen to URIAH HEEP :bruised:

Amy Grant - Baby Baby (No Getting Over You Mix) b/w Lead Me On (1991)

UK chart peak - Number 2

View attachment 34122

Look, @Joseph, it's your FAVOURITE SINGER! :basil:

"Baby Baby" in its original US mix, to be fair to Joe, doesn't sound QUITE RIGHT. It's just a little bit too ORDINARY POP SONG (although that didn't stop it racing to Number 1 ACROSS THE POND). This European remix was produced by someone called Daniel Abraham (nope, me neither) & gives the song just what it needs - an extra bit of OOMPH on the instrumentation & a teeny extra edge - well as much EDGE as can be given to an artist as WHITE BREAD as Amy Grant :D

This more FUN FOR EUROPE mix took off quickly on the radio & it soared up the UK charts, only been kept off the top by Color Me Badd, of all people. This would have been a better Number 1 than them with their awful MULTI COLOURED SUITS & dated LOVERBOY SCHTICK but never mind. The joyous SPARKLE & SHEEN of "Baby Baby" makes for a perfect little pop tune IMO. It's a song that gives me those NOSTALGIC 1991 FEELS more than any other, & it was going to be a hit for whoever sang it, even for someone as unmarketable in the UK as DEVOUT CHRISTIAN Amy Grant. Amy has stated that she actually wrote this song about her newborn daughter rather than a boyfriend & it fits perfectly for either interpretation. I remember I loved the video too & thought she seemed like a FUN GAL.

B side "Lead Me On" is the title track from her 1988 album & reveals that Amy's always been more about LURVE TO GOD & such rather than HAVING FUN. I did actually quite enjoy its uplifting AOR style & I can see why she became so popular on Christian radio (to this day she's the artist I associate the closest with the genre). In fact I feel quite inspired to WORSHIP THE LORD & tell homosexuals they are EVIL SINNERS after listening to it. Although according to the much missed Alla, there was some sort of mysterious LEZZA DRAMA around Amy in 1992, so maybe it's about her wanting to LICK OUT one of her God-fearing chums. Alla, if you're reading this, please come back & REVEAL ALL! Put the EVIL EUROVISION forums on ignore, your contributions are very much missed :(

Follow up "Every Heartbeat" was another US chart topper & was catchy enough to seem all set for another top 10 hit here but for reasons I never fathomed (a lack of promotion is my best guess) it stalled at #25 over here, & Amy's only other significant UK hit was a cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" in 1995 (I know I'll probably be HUNG, DRAWN & QUARTERED by Joni Mitchell fans for this but I vastly prefer the Amy version). After this album she appears to have gone back to her Christian music roots & presumably remains as popular as ever in that area.
My Mum bought this one two :D. We used to play it all the time !

Ah that weird period in the mid 90s when producers would make songs that sound like children’s TV theme tunes with a dance beat over them!

Let's Eat Grandma - Give Me A Reason (2022)

UK chart peak - N/A

20250322_151040.jpg

A sudden, random & one-off LEAP into the MODERN DAY. I'd totally forgotten I had this. It was given away free with the release of Let's Eat Grandma's third & most recent album, "Two Ribbons", to those of us who placed an order for it on the band's official website.

I don't know if Moopy know Let's Eat Grandma but if you don't, you absolutely SHOULD. @octophone if you haven't heard them before I think they'd definitely be your SORT OF THING, & I think they've even worked with the much missed SOPHIE in their early years.

They are 2 BOSOM BUDS from school, Rosa Walton & Jenny Hollingworth, & they've been releasing fab experimental pop electronica since they debuted aged 16 with awesome first album "I Gemini". Follow ups "I'm All Ears" & "Two Ribbons" are also the LIVING TITS, I believe Elton John endorsed them recently & I think they are overdue a commercial breakout soon, but if not, they'll remain one of the best HIDDEN TREASURES in UK music.

I discovered them randomly when driving home from Huddersfield late one Saturday night in 2016 :D I randomly tuned in to them doing a radio interview talking about the first album & playing :disco: single "Eat Shiitake Mushrooms". A couple of months later I saw them live at Liverpool Arts Club for a BARGAIN FIVER, & their whirling dervish dancing & ice cold lack of ACKNOWLEDGEMENT of the audience had me HOOKED. They reminded me strongly (& still do) of Kate Bush, showcasing a similar musical talent for UNUSUAL POP MAGIC.

This single is pretty commercial, sounding like it'd suit usage on some sort of "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" teen drama film. Its gentler than usual electronica & wistful MUSINGS take on a more poignant note when you realise the lyrics are likely about the death of Jenny Hollingworth's boyfriend from a rare form of bone cancer aged just 22 :( It's actually quite a heartbreaking piece given this context.

Outside of this horrid setback, the duo are going from strength to strength musically & I feel like the mainstream BECKONS with the next album, surely due soon, but I'm a dedicated FAN regardless of commercial success anyway. It's ridiculous that a flash in the pan like Wet Leg got showered with awards & critical acclaim when these two have ten times the talent, but hopefully that's RECTIFIED soon. If there isn't already a dedicated thread to them on here I'm setting one up when album 4 is announced.

Oh, & there is no B side, such things having gone out with the STONE AGE by 2022.

I'm now onto the final & MYSTERIOUS PILE of 45s passed on to me by a record collecting friend. And this is far from an AUSPICIOUS START, with this long forgotten charity cover involving the EVIL Sun newspaper. One can ONLY HOPE things pick up.

193 people were killed when the MS Herald of Free Enterprise capsized on 6th March 1987 after it flooded when it left the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium with its bow doors left open. Many of the victims were there due to purchasing cheap tickets via The Sun, so you could argue that Rupert Murdoch is ultimately responsible for their deaths & we should therefore LOCK HIM UP.

Columnist & right wing homophobic tosser Garry Bushell got involved with this charity record, strong arming celebs galore into participating before the bodies of the victims were even COLD. Shame it wasn't 193 HOMOS, EH, GAZ?

Even Macca showed up at PWL to take part, although George & Ringo wisely stayed away. Kate Bush showed up (& provided us with the one actually good bit, sounding genuinely poignant & reflective) & as always with this sort of thing, the most fun to be had is playing SPOT THE CELEB. I've included the back cover as it reads like a Moopy brainstorming session of who to invite :D I immediately spotted such Moopy faves as Hazell Dean, Anne Diamond, Linda Lusardi & Su Pollard. Fortunately they appear to have "forgotten" to invite Cilla Black & Lulu. I'm also unsure who the lady is below Boy George on the cover - Jaki Graham perhaps?

For all the criticism Band Aid has gotten over the years (& I'm as sick of it being recycled for new versions as anyone), at least they got together a bunch of musical talents to record an original song, one that's lasted. Who's going to bother with this sort of pointless cover once it's done the job & shifted a few copies? Just listen to the Beatles version instead! The B side is basically a dub of the refrain, but to be fair to them, time & material were limited.

Unfortunately The Sun is yet to go the way of The News Of The Screws, & although I think its DISGUSTING INFLUENCE has waned a little with the advent of the Internet, Rupert Murdoch & his vile opinions continue to pump TOXICITY across the Western world. The damages he has caused are INCALCULABLE, really, & he's still here at 94. I didn't even bother including him on my Moopy Deathlist as he will clearly NEVER DIE. LOCK HIM UP!

Hazell Dean’s name spelled incorrectly on that back cover, I notice. :D

I think Goodnight Girl is the least worst Wet Wet Wet #1, which is the best I can say for it.

The fact it held Kylie off #1 still SMARTS, though. In fact didn't they do it twice?

Yes, @Sardonicus - I am aware of Let's Eat Grandma although I have fallen behind and haven't heard their most recent album. Never mind the one sided single, my copy of I'm All Ears came with a bonus CD-R which just a bit retro at the time.

Yes. THAT SONG held "Confide In Me" off the top in 1994.

I'm not sure if they might have done it THRICE actually - I'll check to see if "With A Little Help From My Friends" kept "Got To Be Certain" off the top in 1988.

It did! So Kylie's been denied a Number 1 single three times over by Wet Wet Wet.

The current incarnation of Wet Wet Wet (the bassist, the previously non-member guitarist and him out of Liberty X) are touring with Heather Small in the autumn. Another good reason to wish the apocalypse a happy and quick arrival.

That poor non-member guitarist had to wait HOW LONG for a promotion?! :D

40 years! He was hired in 83 and wasn't promoted until the keyboard player and the drummer left at the same time in 2023!

I was today years old when I learned that Anne Diamond has a number one single.
