Katy Perry - 143 (Worst Rated Album EVER by a female artist) (3 Viewers)

Can Katy turn things around and snatch a hit?

  • yes, unconditionally

  • sure, it's never really over

  • maybe, by the grace of god

  • potentially, she's a dark horse

  • probably not (self-inflicted)

  • no, now she's just a ghost

Can a pop star ever hope to make it out of a rut like this and be taken seriously again?

I've said it before and I've said it again, but the #bekind movement seems as far away as that spaceship...

I think Katy's problem is that (you may say wrongly) people will feel VINDICATED in bullying her. Because this hasn't exclusively been about a pop star being a little bit shit. The Dr Luke support is genuinely rather problematic.

The pointless spaceflight is quite problematic too, a ludicrous display of excess that seemingly only achieves OPRAH TEARS and POLLUTION.

Jeff Bezos' girlfriend coming back and saying it inspired her to save the planet... From her husband?

I think she has enough talent to be a hitmaker again. The voice is still there obviously. She just needs to avoid working with people like Dr Luke that have so much baggage attached to them and not bring out computer generated lyrics.

I mean her personality is annoying but that can be said about a lot of artists these days.

Even if she never has another hit, she'll be able to make money off touring for as long as she wants to because Teenage Dream alone contains more GP recognised bangers than most popstars' entire careers.

I mean that tour setlist she posted in space is 85% amazing.

I don't disagree with that.

But I wonder what % of the people piling on even KNOW about that? Because I bet it's rather low...

"I feel super connected to love," Perry said shortly after emerging from the New Shepard crew capsule, in an interview that was part of Blue Origin's mission webcast.

"It's not about me; it's not about singing my songs. It's about a collective energy in there," Perry told Thompson. "It's about us. It's about making space for future woman and taking up space and belonging. And it's about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth."

That's probably a fair observation.

I certainly think Dr Luke was the trigger, but agree a lot of what is going on now is just because Katy Perry disdain became the norm and "cringe".

But I also suspect the conversation will still turn back to Dr Luke as soon as there is any attempt at a "JUSTICE FOR KATY PERRY" discussion. It's all very easy to find if anybody online ever did want a crutch or self-justification.

To expand on Sheena's theme a little, the space thing is obviously LUDICROUS

But I can't think of many of Katy's contemporaries who would react any less RIDICULOUSLY about the whole thing and be mocked as much

Beyonce say, would absolutely be spouting saccharine nonsense about LOVE and POWER (with a heavier dose of GOD), and we'd all be waving stars-and-stripes flags shouting "QUEEN" and "WHO RUN THE WORLD"

Katy will have been well aware she was selected for the "mission" to provide moments and headlines, and she's simply complying.

Now let's all get back to giggling about more deserving topics like SEXY CONFIDENT and DEAD NUNS

Yes, I know it's clickbait and yes, I know I've fallen for it and yes, I know I'm banging on, but this came up this morning on social media and it's really boiled my piss. "Ultimate insult"? If I'd flown to "space", I'd be FUCKING HAPPY to get back down as well, and I might have kissed the fucking ground. And how are the astronauts "stranded in space", like they're lost and gone forever? No, they were trained NASA astronauts who knew the risks. Who the fuck is actually "slamming" her? Just online trolls mostly. The article itself is scathing without ACTUALLY saying anything of any importance, there is barely a mention of the other passengers and the only "balance" quote (right at the end) starts with "They’ve called Katy Perry irrelevant since 2017". It's media bullying at the absolute worst, before you even get to the unflattering photo.

Thing is, when everyone liked Katy Perry back in the day, I couldn't stand her music- and I have no real interest in her as a celebrity, but it's just going too far...

I do agree with this to be honest.

I do think the whole space thing thing was ridiculous - calling them 'astronauts' and all that sort of rubbish, and the whole enterprise being a massive advert for Bezos etc.
But now that the initial memes and laughs about the entire mission have gone a bit quiet, there seems to be a more singular aim online (by trolls, yes) at Katy Perry - which is, I suppose, the easy option given that she is the most famous person out of all of them; and of course her current 'flop' era blah blah etc. etc.
But, really, isn't that the very definition of bullying?

Oh, no denying that the whole space thing is nonsense- but (rhetorical question because we all know) WHY is the discourse not around rich people riching rather than Katy Perry?

And no I'm not saying I'm not guilty of making fun of the 143 era. But the whole 'ha ha Katy Perry is a flop' is tired and old now.

JUST MY OPINION etc. before I get dragged.

I do think she does stuff that exposes her to criticism and makes her an easy target that people don't feel guilty about dragging. The Dr Luke thing is still fresh and will probably make people feel justified in bullying her for some time to come.

It's almost a MASTERCLASS from Jeff Bezos

Katy's the perfect scapegoat for him to hide behind, when he's probably the real villain. There aren't many other people he could have used with such efficiency; presumably Vladimir Putin doesn't take his calls, and Ellen DeGeneres too cunning.

WHAT ABOUT JEFF FUCKING BEZOS’ CLASS?

Fuck me…
what's the argument? that if anyone is getting critique it should be Jeff Bezos, not Katy Perry? right - but she's the one who's chosen to front this brainless exercise in narcissism. she must have known she'd get all this heat for it (and presumably she's OK with that). maybe the idea is that all PR is good PR. or maybe she's stupid enough in an LA way to believe that genuinely this is some milestone for feminism.

It's astounding that people are just finding out that celebrities' 'motivational posts' are nothing but cringey word salad and empty sentiment. It's like a $5 mug with "Love Yourself!" on it.

The thing is, for all her faults, she does generally support progressive causes (vocally pro LGBT, seemingly open and apologetic about criticism of some of her earlier material, endorsed Kamala at the election.)

Whatever you think of her motivations or level of political intellect, I can’t help feeling that she’s the exact type of celebrity who is potentially going to be bullied into the right and then torn apart even more for doing so, in the face of relentless and frankly outsized bullying from, to use a terrible right wing buzz phrase, the tolerant left.

I don't think it's a matter of right or left, or political stances. many of these women are vocally "left". it's just stupidity and vanity.

I don’t disagree, but specifically pertaining to Katy Perry, it really feels like she’s at a stage where she’s damned no matter what she does. As Sheena says, it’s just become a sport to try to humiliate her and read the worst intentions into everything she does.

Katy Perry totally comes across as the type of celebrity who will parrot whichever political party will keep her popular to me. It never seems like she's ever trying to making a political statement, but just does it for marketing purposes. I personally don't even hold that against her, but I totally understand how some people would perceive her as a less-than-smart political sellout.
