Still one of the biggest global hits of the last decade. Max track or annoying novelty song?

It's very good but I never *quite* clicked with it.

Probably wouldn't make my Shakira top ten.

Has Wyclef produced a major hit since this?

I had completely forgotten about it.

How bizarre that it was such a big hit. It's not very good.

Despite giving her a career hit, she really lost momentum with the Oral Fixation project. Don't Bother was a bit of a flop, so they wheeled this out, which was massive but not on the original album release, then belatedly wheeled out boring old 'Illegal' which was a total bomb.

If only Pure Intuition had been given a proper push.

An absolute JAM. She's produced better songs, and I wouldn't necessarily sit at home and listen to it, but whenever I do hear it it's a total ten out of ten moment.

Looking at her english SINGLES discography, it's been dreadful all along! There's mostly lows (Underneath your clothes, The one, Illegal, Gypsy) than highs :( (She Wolf, Don't bother, Rabiosa, Eyes like yours).

She's one of those artists where album tracks/promotional singles beat the actual singles (Pure Intuition and Men In This Town anyone?). I've no idea why the label kept pushing her to release ballads, sure they got more substance but they've been anything but hits. and don't get me started on her Spanish discography, that's a whole different topic but it's grand, I absolutely love her.

The Wyclef song about the stripper doing her thang was so much better. I was happy that she had a hit, but it's little more than a jingle.

This is when Shakira decided to go all out ETHNIC but it's just annoying. But maybe that's because it was played to death by every single Arab I knew at every single fucking occasion. I remember someone wheeling it out at their 5 month year old's baptism. The ACTUAL baptism.

It took me quite a while to work out that Whycliffe and Will.i.am were not the same person.

I'm at a point where I think I can stomach it once or twice on a night out again but by GOD, it was so overplayed in 2006/07.

In many ways it is the complete opposite kind of pop song to *doorslam* Minogue's death-defying trackus in maximalis Disremembrance

Exactly.

It's just noise on a radio.
I remember the fat finance girls at my 08 office party really getting excited for this, while I was secretly hoping the DJ would drop Just Dance or even Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). Maybe that's what soured it for me.

Hasn't Waka Waka quietly sold an absolute shedload? It never properly took off but it lingered in the arse end of the charts forever. I know it had a World Cup connection but aside from that I never quite understood why.

She sounds so ridiculous when she sings AAAND I'M ON TONIGHT

It's a great dancing song nonetheless

Not sure about sales, but it's one if the most watched music videos on YouTube, 7th apparently, it was 4th for a decent while!

I quite enjoyed it at the time and couldn't care less about it now. I was mystified it was such a massive smash, even when I did like it. Didn't it set a downloads record at the time in the US? Early days for digital, but still...

I just went on a SHAKIRA search after mentioning her in an earlier thread and just hit "0" on this by accident when I meant 10 :(

kinda hate it, i think i didn't mind it that much back then.

waka waka however i despised and for some reason fell in love with years later. there's a k something mix of it that (sans guitar bit) is quite amazing.

I fucking love Shakira but this was a) overplayed and b) a bit to clunky to really have a good dance too and I can do all the hip & chest drops/isolations etc.

she truly doesn't age, it's wild.

She's rewriting history about Hips Don't Lie. Oh, SHAK. We all know Don't Bother flopped, and the label went rogue, desperately doing anything to bring it back to the charts because they didn't see anything worth releasing as a single to salvage the campaign.

They fucked up anyway by releasing Illegal (!!!) after Hips  Don't @ me, I do like the album.

It feels like it's never gone away. A truly monster hit. I'm bemused by her continued streaming power. Her music is largely terrible.

I totally agree. A significant portion of her streaming numbers comes from her ’90s hits (and some early 2000s gems), but it feels like she lost her direction after She Wolf. Since then, it’s like she stopped caring, churning out random, lackluster reggaeton collabs like Rabiosa, Copa Vacía, and Monotonía, along with bland, generic radio tracks like Don’t You Worry, Girl Like Me, and Don’t Wait Up. It all just comes off as desperate, yet people still eat it up — I don’t get it. Someone needs to lock her in the studio until she gives us another Antología, Ojos Así, or at least another La Tortura.

I think she’s one of those “we just like her” artists that hat can release any old things and we eat it up because it’s Shakira
