For some reason, I have a vivid childhood memory of watching these guys being interviewed on breakfast TV while promoting this song and the hosts declaring them 'Britain's second favourite band' - which I found most confusing as I'd never heard of them at that stage. Young spice, who was far more
methodical about things as a lil' stripling, marched off to school that day and foisted an improvised oral survey upon his classmates which revealed that the televised statement was likely NOT THE CASE, much to his ire.
Regardless, I recall enjoying 'Perfect 10' at the time, and I
really liked how they didn't resemble any chart superstars I was familiar with, which is sth that made me wanna root for them (I guess that ties in with the song somewhat too?). But it hasn't held up particularly well imo... probably amongst their hokiest lyrical endeavours, and not a worthy demonstration of the wit they're readily capable of. On a possibly related note, I can't name a single thing they did after this point.
I do appreciate all their other major hits, however. Well, the originals: 'Song for Whoever', 'A Little Time', 'You Keep It All In', 'Rotterdam', 'Don't Marry Her', 'Old Red Eyes Is Back' - richly melodic kitchen-sink pop with hooks for days and some biting profundity (as a professional boozehound, 'Red Eyes' is always one heck of an
experience to listen to). The few Housemartins songs I know are all gems as well.
Read
an interview with Paul Heaton not too long ago where he came across like a truly lovely chap. If I ever return to the UK I'm going to go on a nationwide pub crawl until I (inevitably) find him, befriend him, and explain why 'they could never be blue' for me either.
