Apparently she was in the running to play Maria in this Spielberg remake but was pipped to the post. SHAME!

The role went to a high school student who you can hear below singing an unknown song

Ansel Elgort is playing Tony

I’ve never seen the original

Ansel Elgort is fit. The girl is giving me irritating Rachel from Glee vibes, but nobody is as irritating as Camila Cabello, so it's okay.

Isn't Tony supposed to be Latino? Weird choice to whitewash that role in 2019.

Nah, his gang is white Americans.

It's the Sharks that are the Puerto Rican gang, whereas the Jets are white, so its the Maria role that will have the whitewashing controversy rather than the Tony one.

Oh really? I just saw on the BBC the casting call was for Latino or Puerto Rican actresses

Apparently, she's Colombian-American which I guess is close enough to keep them out of trouble?

Yeah, there won't be any controversy over her casting.

I can’t seem to understand the text

A woman has accused Ansel Elgort, star of Disney’s upcoming Steven Spielberg movie “West Side Story,” of sexually assaulting her in 2014 when she was 17.

The woman named Gabby, who did not reveal her last name, tweeted a statement on Friday and claimed the actor, now 26, sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager. Gabby described sobbing and being in pain and said, “I didn’t want to do it the only words that came out of his mouth were ‘we need to break you in.'”

Gabby said that in 2014, she direct messaged Elgort letting him know that it would soon be her 17th birthday and said Elgort then gave her his private Snapchat account and asked for nude photos. She also posted a photo of what appeared to be her sitting with Elgort as well as what she said is a screenshot of their direct message exchange. Gabby said she was coming forward now “so I can finally heal.”

The woman added, “Years later, I have PTSD, I have panic attacks I go to therapy.”

Gabby further described Elgort requesting a threesome with herself and one of her “dance friends,” who she said were also underage. Gabby said she did not tell anyone because he told her it would “ruin his career.” She added there is “much more” to her story.

“He made me think this is how sex was supposed to be. I WAS SO YOUNG AND HE KNEW THAT. He as well said stuff like, ‘you’re going to be such a beautiful young lady when you’re older.” I was f—ing 17,” she said in her statement.

They managed to get rid of that pretty quickly 🥴

Anyway there should be some clip/trailer of this coming out during the Oscars broadcast tonight (tonight)

I don’t know if they got rid of it or it just wasn’t what was first presented.

Somewhere is such a good song. I hope they don't do a Les Mis/Cats with it. I don't want to see any SNOT.

Absolutely loved it, and I've only ever given the 1961 film a 7/10 before. Never seen it on the stage. You can't help but make comparisons and they should be seen completely separately and there are parts from 1961 I still prefer (mostly the choreography, which was still great, but the other is too iconic).

Ansel Elgort really being the biggest "name" actor in the cast is kind of the weak link as far as singing/dancing goes, but that's only in comparison to everyone else because they're so great. What I'm saying is, please continue to make movie musicals and not be afraid to cast experienced stage actors in lead roles.

The 1961 movie is perhaps one of my favourite movies ever so it had a lot to live up to but I loved it. The dance routines were spectacular and Spielberg absolutely got the tone correct.

The lack of Spanish subtitles on screen when whole conversations were taking place didn't bother me, it made it more authentic.

I really liked this. I’ve not seen the original of the stage version so I have nothing to compare it against.

Arianna DeBose was the highlight, the movie would have been better had it been about Anita and not dreary ungrateful Maria.

I must say the chemistry between Maria and Tony is so much better here. The 1961 film really isn’t perfect even without the weird brown-facing and vocal dubbing. Changing the order of a couple of songs and having Tony sing “Cool” pre-fight worked much better.

I thought they were fine, it’s just such a big ask for me to buy that she’s fucking her boyfriend with her brother’s blood all over him.

Still happens in the show, although sex isn’t hugely implied. Should have made Bernardo her cousin like in Romeo & Juliet to make the forgiveness a little more plausible… and Maria still should have died at the end too.

i sorta appreciated it. that's the best i can say about this film.
sure - it was big and vibrant, the songs were great, the movement was fabulous but i got utterly bored halfway through those 156 minutes.

i quite liked maria - she really has a sparkle about her but she didn't convince me at the moment it really counted. anita was pretty good and so were the others. not a fan of elgort, he was ok but there is something vacant about him. i didn't understand the point of the trans character. why were they there? there was no purpose, it felt like tokenism. the auntie was shit and don't get me started about them fapping after what he did to her brother?!?

so yeah, pretty lavish and extremely pointless imho.

Why is including a trans character tokenism? The character in the original is a tomboy who hangs around the jets. It’s not exactly a stretch and considering that TERFs are very public these days, it’s good to have representation in major movies.

i don't remember the tomboy from the original so i didn't get the parallel and it felt shoehorned for the sake of representation. i guess i just wish they'd done something with the character that went beyond that.

Going to see this for a second time as it's playing once this afternoon and is such a big screen film if there ever was one. It'll definitely be nowhere by next week.
