Will Trump join Biden in leaving the presidential race?

I’m sorry I just don’t see her beating Trump. There’s no momentum on the Democratic ticket, the only chance I thought they had was a big moment at the DNC with someone coming through Obama style and uniting the party with a fresh take. Momentum is everything in American politics. The left lack a narrative. Trump has several.

Her VP pick might be her way forward. Praying that she does something that really makes a difference with that pick. I’m sure they’re doing all kinds of polling right now to see what the different ticket scenarios do to the poll splits.

Fun fact: Trump once donated to a Harris campaign.

There’s no momentum on the Democratic ticket
It's a bit early to say that now that they don't currently have one.

They're in the news, they've cleared their biggest weakness (age) and Harris will have command of the news agenda for the next few days. This is exactly the point that they'll start getting momentum with a new message to take to the electorate.

Whether it's enough to tip it remains to be seen

calling our correspondent on the ground @RJN hun, what's the best path for the dems right now?
I feel like Kamala is the best chance. Republicans are going to attack anyone, and of course the racism and sexism, but I think it’s better to just get someone on the ticket quickly and without drama

My real on-the-ground opinion is that nobody around me is excited about this election, and there isn’t any “momentum” on either side.

I hope so. I just can’t see it at the moment. She’s untested in so many ways. Hopefully she’ll surprised us all. The good thing is she isn’t coming in with high expectations so she has a chance to impress.

Can't work out if putting Project 2025 centre stage as a tactic for the Democrats would be a benefit or not.

I think the worst thing the Republicans can do is start a stealth racism and sexism campaign. It’ll backfire. As horrible and ironic as it is, it actually wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to a Harris campaign.

Gavin Newsome seems to be the only path to VP I think, if they want to actually pick up any straight white male votes at ALL in November!

I don’t know that Newsom is a good fit for VP anyway. California has a lot of problems that the Republicans could point to and essentially blame him for, not least the ever-spiralling homelessness issue.

Does it have to be a governor who gets the VP nod?

No idea if he even wants it, but Ossoff kind of ticks all the other boxes on paper.

Regardless of whether she can win, she is the best option at the moment - obviously better than Biden (all the polls say she’ll do better than Biden would against Trump) and any other candidate needs a month of in-fighting amongst the democrats before they win. She is the only way to present a united front at the moment.

I still don’t think she is likely to win but I do think she’s the safest option at this moment in time. (If Biden had stepped down 6 months ago I’d say differently).

On one hand, Kamala is a very convenient choice. She's the natural successor, she's much wittier and more fearless than Biden in a debate, and her relative inexperience in Congress will make her easy to manager.

On the other hand, it all feels a bit lamb to the slaughter. Like they're just using her as convenient fodder until they can get an ACTUAL candidate for 2028, since good qualified candidates like Whitmer wouldn't touch this election with a cattle prod.

But who knows. Kamala is SCRAPPY. She'll definitely put up a fight. Actually, it's a shame that they made the debates more CIVIL.

I'm hoping the Democrats are aware that waiting until 2028 is not an option. Trump has a plan, organisation and a team this time and is therefore far more dangerous.
