Katy Perry - 143 (Worst Rated Album EVER by a female artist) (3 Viewers)

Can Katy turn things around and snatch a hit?

  • yes, unconditionally

  • sure, it's never really over

  • maybe, by the grace of god

  • potentially, she's a dark horse

  • probably not (self-inflicted)

  • no, now she's just a ghost

the quality of Witness was just... shocking, once you remove the 3 singles (all 10s).

I like this one

plus the title song, and Deja Vu is listenable... in a slightly shameful way. the rest? bin. one of the worst BPG albums I can think of honestly.

Chained to the Rhythm MUST have been the last song recorded. it screams "we need a hit, call in the pros".

Anyway on the subject of Katy Perry songs we’re comfortable admitting we like, I think Wide Awake is quite lovely and a rare moment of (relative) reflection.

My favourite song of hers by a considerable distance.

As an exercise in hitmaking, there really isn't much to dispute about the 'Teenage Dream' era being remarkably strong both musically and visually, even if some of it now feels of its time. Leaving the Dr Luke thing aside (and, to be honest, I think some media commentators would've turned a blind eye if 'Woman's World' had been any good), what this thread highlights is how little consensus there is beyond that of what a "good" Katy Perry song sounds like. There are so many random tracks being tossed about. People will always have their individual favourites from an artist, but there's still usually a broad agreement around certain ones.

Clearly, Dr Luke is not the answer for who Katy Perry should be working with in 2024. But there's no obvious alternative either.

I think, unfortunately for her, the quintessential Katy Perry sound is also the quintessential Dr Luke sound.

Which isn’t to say working with him was the only option available to her. But she was obviously banking on building this comeback around giving the public what they’ve historically shown that they want from her - big, brassy, maximalist pop of which Dr Luke was the major producer in her heyday.

Now that she’s sort of blown it with a weak lead single and all this bad press, it’s hard to imagine how she can pivot.

I do expect some kind of tearful mea culpa for the Dr Luke thing at some point after the dust had settled, if only as an act of damage control.

sorry but this is insane!

she's worked with many hitmakers over the years who she could turn to again - any combination of Max Martin/Ali Payami/Shellback/Ilya for one thing, or Greg Kurstin, Charlie Puth (!!!) pushed her sound forward nicely on Harleys in Hawaii which became a mini-hit a year or two later...

but on the other hand there's a whole world of young talent out there and A&R people whose literal job it is to connect them with popstars like Katy! Dan Nigro has done an incredible job producing for Olivia (almost all of her work), Chappell, Caroline etc. Good Luck Babe is one of this year's biggest songs. Oscar Görres and Styalz Fuego who did most of Troye's album together - that soundscape would be perfect for Katy. Lostboy, who did Padam for Kylie among others, if she wants to go a bit club thumper.

why would there be no obvious alternative to Luke? it just requires some IMAGINATION!

I think more or less the whole album is by Luke, and usually he has a contract saying all/the first 3 singles released need to be his songs. it's bad for her.
I don't buy this. Why would someone of Katy Perry's stature be tied to such a restrictive contract particularly since the producer in question is an industry pariah?

I've read many times that it's quite standard when Luke produces an album that X many singles including the first single have to be his. Doja Cat for example was forced to release Need to Know second from Planet Her despite apparently hating it. he has a massive amount of industry sway, almost everybody is at best one or two degrees of separation away from his publishing arm, Prescription Songs.

he's absolutely not a music industry pariah - a massive record label just gave him their biggest artist's lead single (with a second to follow!).

Pretty much exactly as VoR says:

For the last few albums, she's been dabbling with other writers and producers, and that's not to say there haven't been moments where it's worked. But this time, the intention seems to be doing something ostensibly risk-averse (lol); they're not trying to be imaginative. In that regard, there aren't any obvious alternatives to draw on because even where she's struck up decent partnerships with writers and producers, the album campaigns have still been a bit scattershot.

On the other side of this album, I don't disagree there are plenty of directions she could take with established or newer hitmakers that aren't Dr Luke. It just seems she would benefit from looking at what's worked (or what hasn't) over the last decade and developing something with a more cohesive direction so that the default response to "we need a hit Katy Perry record" isn't Dr Luke.

Or maybe she just really likes working with him.

I'm every woman he wants to - WUT?* :manson:

Some people are just unbearable.

Anyway, I hope Crystal Waters releases a statement or goes on the record Val Cherish style with an Instagram live.

*answers on a postcard/to the judge whilst taking the stand.

I don’t believe she’s stuck in a contract with him either, she’s too rich for that. She spent millions murdering that nun and stealing her land. She literally has enough cash to take ON GOD and WIN.

LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE!
Jack Antonoff!!!!!
