My current theory is that the wife died in a freak accident - either collapsed or the heater fell on her head (although apparently no obvious signs of injury). Dog ate the pills nearby and died. Gene Hackman found his wife dead and ran for help but fell, then died from the fall a few days later.

It seems relatively plausible. Wife dies in accident or takes her own life. Gene goes for help, falls, and dies.

My step grandmother had no idea my grandfather had a heart attack, despite collapsing in front of her. It was only the fact he was on the phone to my auntie that help was called. So yeah entirely feasible.

Searched flu symptoms and ‘can flu make you dizzy’ in the days leading up to her death online. It’s really really tragic. What a shame she wasn’t a little more proactive about it - I imagine they have treatment for this kind of illness if they are able to diagnose it.
