More face to face assessments for people claiming higher benefits for their disability

Kendall criticised the fact that face-to-face assessments under the Conservatives had fallen from seven in 10 to only one in 10.

She said the government would shift the focus back to doing more face-to-face assessments and said they would be recorded.

a lot of it sounds... traumatic and cruel to me. some real Tory nastiness from Labour there and a punch down to a lot of people with disabilities who'll be worse off.

How is promoting face to face assessments over online box-ticking cruel and traumatic? Surely the depersonalisation of benefits claimants is a large part of the problem?

I’d be interested in the views of people who actually work in the field, but surely nobody would argue that the benefits/jobseekers support system as it stands is pretty profoundly broken?

The good stuff is good, yes, but the bad stuff is absolutely dire, and all because of this ridiculous urge to stick to their fiscal rules and to not raise any wealth taxes.

It's cold comfort to be rejected in person than by an online form.

the good stuff is minimal. Labour can dress this up all they want, but if as a government looking to balance the books you make targeted, real-terms cuts to some of the most vulnerable in society while still not taxing the rich sufficiently in any number of ways... you're making a clear ideological statement about what you really stand for. it's cruel.

is Starmer content with being a PM who's seen as somewhat capable stepping in with international crises, while continuously fucking up at home?

the timing of it all is quite suspect too. Labour are just so shit.

Vote Green

They could really do with a decent front person, because the more I see Carla Denyer crashing and burning every time she's on... anything, it makes the lack of wider media coverage granted to the party feel like more of an act of kindness than an institutional bias.

Ask if you can borrow Patrick Harvie from the Scottish Greens. He's a pretty decent media performer.

Plus no control over his facial expressions so you know exactly what he's thinking :disco:

Is the idea not that the face to face appointments mean that people who need the benefits are much less likely to be wrongly rejected than they would through an online form? Is the truly cruel and arbitrary thing not that so many people were getting their claims rejected, spending months without their benefits and then winning on appeal? That’s what more face to face assessments should stamp out.

Which is undercut entirely by reducing the budget and making PIP harder to claim!

One thing Labour really should do in tandem with this is push back on the industry backslide against WFH. I imagine a lot of people at risk of losing PIP under these plans might find it easier to return to work in a WFH setting.

Oh that'd be really strong without that one line of the chorus, wouldn't it

They’re surely going to have to at least partially U-turn on the PIP clawbacks, aren’t they?

I still think there’s broadly good stuff in the wider push to reform the benefits system, but it’s tough to deny that this has been a complete PR fuck up that threatens to become the defining mis-step of this government. The farmer’s stuff felt mostly media concocted, but this is a total failure to read the room.

Well I for one am SHOCKED at the Great British Public's fickleness and impatience

We've always made WISE political judgements traditionally

Precisely. All that graph tells me is the short memories of most people.

I don't know if you've cropped something out but that makes NO SENSE

Compared to our previous Conservative government, would you say that our new Labour Government...

What, More in Common, WHAT WOULD THEY HAVE SAID!?

Ask HIM

At this point I think the only solution is to give Dame Liz Truss a presenter slot on the One Show, because clearly Middle England and Facebook huns need to be reminded of LETTUCE and how we ended up in this mess at all, and because I think Mopsy would enjoy it greatly

OR LABOUR COULD STOP BEING SHIT!

They could

But honestly I think this was going to happen regardless of their performance

Your average Linda and Dave who flip-flop between Labour and the Tories were always going to have a deeply unrealistic expectation of an overnight fix to the mess it took the Tories years to build.

The only way to please those people is to play POPULISM which I don't really want Labour to do frankly

Caveat - I do also want them to stop being shit though

God, the Scottish and Welsh elections can't come soon enough. Some electoral consequences for their shit is desperately needed, and not JUST to Reforms benefit

As long as it's LEFT WING populism they should go right ahead.

FREE INTERNET FOR ALL

Left Wing isn't populism in the the western world right now :(

We don't want FREE INTERNET FOR ALL, BECAUSE ALL INCLUDES THOSE WRONGUNS WHO COME IN BOATS AND WANT JIHADI SHAMIMA BEGUM LAW
