With the conflict still ongoing and Israel's behaviour in it even harder to justify than this time last year, I'd like to think that there will be more pushback from broadcasters than this time last year. Not that I see it leading to them being kicked out by any means.

I also imagine that a year later, there won't be as energetic a campaign from the general public to have them removed (nor quite the strength of televote in their favour either)

If the Slovene broadcaster sticks to their threat to black out the screen when Israel perform, they'll be disqualified. I'm sure they'll back down though.

The level of televote hijacking is going to be interesting to watch this year. You'd expect a degree of apathy to kick in on both sides, but if it becomes *the* talking point of this year again, they probably will end up with another huge score.
 
I'd have thought these conversations would have all already been had between the broadcasters and organisers over the last few months.

It surely helped that last year's performance was simultaneously bland and featured inscrutable interpretive dance, but what if they send somebody who serves cunt this year? A disaster.

I don't see it happening, but even if it does have the votes to get passed without modification, the whole process is probably going to be working on a timeline that goes beyond this year's contest.

If they wanted a real debate they'd at least threaten withdrawal. They don't, so they aren't.
 
I think a debate can happen without the heat and drama of withdrawal threats - but doing this four weeks before the Contest does not strike as a serious effort to have Israel removed this year. Presumably they're responding to internal pressure and this is little more than a gesture.
 
I don't think the debate goes anywhere other than the answer we already have if nobody's willing to say 'it's us or them'.
 
There's absolutely no difference from last year, nothing has changed, it's just a little less hot than it was a year ago.

Such gestures are obviously just that. The Spanish, like everyone, is fully aware that for whatever reason, the EBU ain't budging.
 
So far things don't appear to be as heated as last year. I suspect the artists will largely stay away from it this time. If anything, Israel sending an October 7 survivor as their performer might dampen things, because it's self evident that booing/protesting her is going to be a futile and self-defeating effort. I'm hoping the general reaction is just to give them as little fuel for more publicity as possible.
 
Given the EBU's response the day of the Russian invasion was to say that nothing had changed, they wanted to stay above politics, and they weren't inclined to do anything about Russia being in that year - and it took a third of the competitors saying they'd withdraw from that year to get them to budge - it's safe to say their presumption will always be for everyone to be in unless their hand is forced by other participants withdrawing.

They'll obviously get a big televote. The question is whether it matches last year, and that's a lot more likely to happen if they once again become the story of this year's Contest.

But also, the EBU actively removes anything negative, so it becomes a one way love in….
 
The main objective for EBU is to activate as many members / rightsholders as possible - combine that with their aversion to decision-making in (crisis) comms and you can read every tea leaf when it comes to Israel, last year’s Joost saga and Russia 3 years ago.
