I copied and pasted the e acute from Wikipedia because I'm not that clever.

This threw itself up on my iPod today in the sunshine and I was reminded what a fucking blinding pop song it is. The video and the song itself raise so many questions, I don't know where to begin:

WHY IS ALIZÉE BEING PAID MONEY BY A MAN CLEARLY A DECADE OLDER THAN HER?

WHY IS ALIZÉE'S MUM SUCH A CUNT? SURELY SHE COULD NOT HAVE PRODUCED SUCH A PRETTY CHILD UNLESS HER HUSBAND/SPERM DONOR/GAY BEST FRIEND WAS HOT?

HOW DO ALIZÉE AND HER DAUGHTER/SISTER GET ON THE BUS WHEN IT IS CLEARLY PASSING THEM WHILST THEY RUN THROUGH A FIELD?

HOW DID ALIZÉE'S DAUGHTER/SISTER GET INTO A CLUB?

HOW ON EARTH DID A FOREIGN-LANGUAGE SONG GET INTO THE UK TOP 10 IN 2000?

I fucking love this. Everything is so sinister. The whole package makes me feel like I'm stoned when I'm not.

Oh Spuggie. A welcome return!

This is obviously one the best pop songs of the 00s.

It's stupendous, and the best thing to come out of France ever

The outro is death-defying

I fucking LOVE LOVE LOVE this. What a fucking SLUT Alizée is! :disco: I agree Lou - the outré is FABULOUS! :disco:

Everything about it is and always will be SIMPLY SENSATIONAL :disco:

Particularly that CREAKING DOOR NOISE which appears at some juncture

If I remember correctly, the mixes on the single weren't too bad either. In some ways I think I'm satisfied not to know what is actually happening with the lyrics - back then I wasn't too far out of French GCSE and possibly had a better idea.

Better use of ellipsis than '... Baby One More Time', À MON AVIS.

I think I used the line "tout prêts à se jeter sur moi" in my French GCSE and got an A* for the trouble :disco:

Phoenix: GET OUT. Until you've questionably accepted money from a hot-enough French man and run through a farmer's field with an unidentified child in Europe, your vote is NULL AND VOID as much as I may otherwise enjoy you.

It's a 10 from me. Love this song and I was very pleased I see it in the Top10 when it was released.

A 15/10 track if ever there was one (performed by someone underage at least). Even if Mylène was at the brink of going overboard with the puns on this one. Hello, helli, t'es A / L.O.L.I.T.A. anyone? :D

The less said about the Real Music cover version by French Pop Idol winner Julien Doré that topped the Walloon charts in 2007, the better of course :gross:

These are the times I regret not having learned French.

Completely incredible. I find it mind-boggling that it managed to go top ten in the UK (except for the fact that it's brilliant).

Gourmandises is really good too.

With regards to its Top 10 placing, I'd put this down to two factors:

1. A fair amount of play on The Box
2. The SCANDAL of it being a paedo song being reported in quite a few national papers at the time.

I didn't realise she was 15 when this was released. That's creepy as fuck. Obviously the turn of the century was a great time for paedo pop.

By the time it was finally released in the UK she was nearly 18 though. But yes, just 15 in the video.

I remember it being a bit of a nailbiter on Dotmusic at the time who would go in higher that week: this or VB's "A Mind of its Own". It was a veritable Blur/Oasis fight for the more easily pleased!

With the exception of JA Rule and the worst S Club 7 single ever, what an amazing top ten.

The top 10 is largely awful, with the execption of Alizee and Puretone, which wasn't THAT good in the first place. Odd considering that only a month before this, I liked 8 songs in the top 10 - a record.

Better songs on that chart:

Timo Maas
Flip and Fill f/ K. Llo
Jakatta
Sophie EB
Daniel Bedingfield
DJ Aligator
Goldtrix

Hero has been killed by overplay but it's still great for what it is IMO.

Addicted To Bass is fabulous. I really enjoyed the singer Amiel's solo track 'Lovesong', which I expected to be a big hit. Didn't happen though.

I take it you liked the debut single ONLY? His other material doesn't seem quite up your alley, with the possible exception of the still-quite-dancey (and lyrically insane) "James Dean (I Wanna Know)".

I bought that single too. The rest of his output was utter dross. And then came is dreadful sister.

I'll also use this occasion to have another moan about the cease-and-desist of the amazing chartarchive.org database of full Top 100 charts (singles AND albums), with clickable links for every title and near-complete cover pictures, and instead having to make to do with the shitty Top 40s on the OCC site, with just current week and previous positions, and often mistakes in artists and titles :( Though thankfully there still is a chartography for all artists alphabetically online!

So I've never heard this before today, but this thread inspired me to download it, and now I LOVE it! It's just so :disco:

The song's really grown on me. It makes me want to track down some heart-shaped glasses and go cruising for a sugar daddy.

LO.LI.TA.

Utterly tremendulent in EVERY way. One of my favourite songs of all time and the parent album is JUST AS GOOD for the most part...
