RUDE!

I’m fascinated by this. Getting a 230 minute story down to a 90 minute one seems a bit crazy to me… I can imagine they’re cutting almost entire episodes out in the middle.

Quite enjoyed this, despite its rather paper thin plot.

It being partially set in PALESTINE and also finding time to say fuck you to the 2020s Tories was very :disco:

Think I need to rewatch. I kinda felt it still a bit lacking in humour compared to the RTD1 and Moffat eras, but maybe I lost my sense of humour at the absolutely valid criticism of Tory 2020.

I liked it, but I felt it lacked having a proper baddy to drive the plot and make it more of a big broad adventure (what I want from a Christmas special). I definitely preferred last year's.

Ncuti was great, as per, and I loved the hotel lady. The jesusy twist made me laugh and was objectively terrible, but I liked that they went there.

The 'season two' trailer is good:

The Interstellar Song Contest looks like it might well coincide with Eurovision with it being episode 6 and the series starting in April?!

This is back in less than 12 hours time (?!) For what could be its last series in a long long time, if reports are to be believed (:()

Based entirely on this, I have a good feeling about the new companion:

How come? I thought it was meant to be back with a bang after the international distribution rights!

I think they had expectations for the first season which didn’t happen. But it was also the first season that was dumped on streaming before airing on broadcast, which I’m sure effected viewing figures.

Oh boomer, no no no. Streaming IS viewing figures! It might not be recorded in the overnight ones, but it's still people who are watching. And it's surely way more substantial and important for the future of a show, because who the fuck is sitting down to watch a drama on terrestrial TV in 2025 if it's on streaming already? Though this particular point isn't relevant to Disney, coz they are only streaming.

Ep 1 was a solid 3.5 stars from me. I loved the set up, and Belinda is already terrific, but the story descended into RTD jibberish for the final 10 mins or so. I did lol v hard at the sperm and the egg baddy being polish polished though. My highlight was Mrs Flood at the start. TAKE CARE, BELINDA :D

Finally caught up on both the Christmas episode and episode 1 of new series tonight…

I would really appreciate them writing just one episode in which Ncuti doesn’t do that trademark staring into the distance and crying a single tear (often for someone we’ve only know for mere seconds). It just doesn’t work as an emotional break and hasn’t been earnt.

I enjoyed the hotel lady, Anita, and wish she’d been the main companion in the Christmas episode.

I like Belinda a lot but another thing that RTD has an annoying tendency to do is introduce companions and tell us they are ‘the most important person in the universe’ and the companion say ‘me? But what’s so special about me?’ . It paid off pretty well with Donna - but obviously with Ruby came to absolutely nothing. So I’m disappointed they’ve started Belinda’s arc with exactly the same idea. Actress seems great though!

Both of these episodes were average as fuck. They really do lack some of the humour and actually also darkness of the earlier days.

Should we be very very worried for the future now with only 2 million overnights for this episode?

I'm at the point where I'd really not miss it if it went dark again for a while. Revive it in a decade with an entirely new team and point of view please.

Fair enough, as long as that did happen... I'm not completely off the idea of a proper break too.

I'd have welcomed a break in the Chibnall-Whittaker years, but would be sad to see it rested now when it's good again! It will need a 10-15 year break at some point though, to come back strong, but ideally not after year two of a reboot.

I thought this week's was great fun, albeit with another drivelly ending. Mr Ring-a-Ding is an icon and I enjoyed the light fan roasting. The overly emotional music/ending to them not being real felt unearned though.

I recently saw the Byker Grove ending on YouTube and this was painfully similar to the "fans"!

I dunno it was fun but I don't like the whole 4th wall smashing stuff. It'd be a shame if the final episode of Doctor Who for the foreseeable future is all maximum 4th wall "it's not real anyway you know" stuff.
