Have we no thread for this yet? Absolutely bonkers musical on Netflix. All the lead women were great, and could definitely see Zoe Saldana in the conversation for supporting actress wins over awards season.

saw it in a packed cinema in Paris a few weeks back, it’s brilliant and my favourite movie of 2024

Wins Best Picture at the Golden Globes… and we only have 2 votes on the poll. Need to watch this!

I liked it a lot! I find the criticisms a little grating. “It’s not sensitive or realistic” I don’t think it’s meant to be honey!

I watched this last night after watching a couple of Youtubers (talking about this streaming movie) addressing the backlash, and I actually quite enjoyed it.

I don't understand any criticism about it being 'boring'? There was always something going on and I didn't feel like it dragged at all. "La Vaginoplastia" is obviously a ridiculous musical number but outside of that, I didn't think anything else was that odd.

I'm fine with it receiving awards noms, but wins are maybe a bit much. I preferred all the movies that it beat out for 'Best Picture - Musical or Comedy' at the Globes.

Why is everyone SO MAD at this movie?

well, the overall acting is an abomination (except maybe for Zoe which, given the material, makes the most of it), the songs are translated poorly (originally written in French, then translated to English and eventually Spanish) and makes a mockery of my country whose image is already so tarnished by the adoration of narc culture that they decided to make a half-arsed attempt of a movie based on that.
At least Robert Rodriguez had the decency of making Machete a comedy back then; but for EP to be nominated for an Oscar is surely a sign of what things are coming in the future, trash getting awards.

It’s an opera and all of the elements of the story are hyper-realistic. It’s not meant to be an accurate representation of Mexican culture or trans life. It’s a musical melodrama. Everyone is clearly a villain! It’s not pretending to be a documentary and it’s trying to tell an interesting story so of course it delves deep into the extremes of human behaviour, because Brenda in HR in Guadalajara isn’t an interesting story.

SORRY

The “this was made by a straight western man” energy is evident but I just found the complete disregard for tortured identity politics a little refreshing.

Maybe you're right and I misunderstood the point and instead thought it lacked sensitivity regarding trans people's portrayal, a cartoon-like representation of a country, and the fact that I will forever be baffled that Selena Gomez keeps getting high-profile work despite being one of the worst actresses in the world; I know being an industry darling can get you so far, yet this IS too far. I cannot with her getting praise for her deadpan delivery, takes away a lot of the seriousness from the storyline.

EDIT: and honestly I am pissed off that Margaret was ignored for The Substance altogether

I found this very disappointing after all the awards noise. It veers dramatically all over the place in tone, the songs are terrible and the pacing is wildly inconsistent. Zoe was pretty good, but the rest of the performances were mediocre. Well apart from Selena Gomez, she outdid everyone else by being TRULY terrible :D

Why does Selena Gomez deliver any line as though she is about to fall asleep. Not just in this, but anything.

It’s so weird isn’t it.

Her impassioned speech about ‘her people’ in Mexico this week was so full of emotion but before that I was unsure she actually had any feelings at all.

Still love Only Murders In The Building but her wooden delivery is actually part of its charm to me. 😂

everything just keeps getting progressively deliciously WORSE for this rotten piece of movie :disco:

Now Karla Sofia Gascon has accused Fernanda Torres' team of inciting hatred against her & "Emilia Perez":

Currently speed-running at completely torpedoing their Oscar chances. What a MESS.

Haven't seen it yet so I'll refrain from commenting on whether the film itself is PROBLEMATIQUE.

Today's scandal involves a whole bunch of tweets Karla Sofia Gascon made a few years ago that are - being very generous - INADVISABLE.

I have to wonder why the Netflix PR team haven't had people trawling through social media accounts to SCRUB anything PROBLEMATIQUE? Surely they'd know it's potentially an issue.

FFS, I'm filming an episode of The Chase next week & their team got me to remove an Instagram post from 2021 as it contained a swear word :D Surely an Oscar campaign would carry out similar...

When was the last time (if ever) a movie got this many nominations at the Oscars to such derision?

I haven’t seen it yet but I’m really hoping this isn’t just a sign of the public’s view on this subject matter (I fear some of it definitely is from the comments I’ve seen regarding her inclusion as Lead Actress).

I think most of the criticism is coming from chronically online gen z twitter rather than TRANSPHOBES.

I pretty much enjoyed all the parts of this that didn't involve the fuck-awful music. The vaginaplasty song is the obvious low-point, the rest are generally just flat and boring. I really think it'd be a much better film if it had been played straight.

I didn't find it to be terrible though. It was kind of like a much less elegant Almodovar film. I thought Gascon, problematic as she clearly is, gave a very good performance. Saldana was solid. Gomez definitely didn't do anything remotely Oscar-worthy, but I didn't find her to be distractingly weak. I obviously can't attest to the quality of her Spanish though.

What I really don't understand is how it got so many below the line nominations. Cinematography? It looked like shit!

THANK YOU Karla Sofía Gascón for destroying the chances of this offensive ABOMINATION of a movie. Great job girl!

For me this was ABSOLUTE TAT, and not in a good way.

Rarely boring, though. And I do think Saldaña is really good in it, so I don’t begrudge her the wins. I think its presence as a nominee in so many other categories is more down to evil old Netflix’s ability to spend so much on campaigning and getting it seen by so many voters though

Finally watched this just now. Kept me entertained if a tad OVERLONG, but obviously MESSY & PROBLEMATIQUE. Struggling to figure out how exactly it's managed 13 Oscar nominations, definitely not your usual AWARDS FODDER.

Saldana sweeping the awards season is bizarre to me - she's decent but not a standout - & also clearly the co-lead. Selena Gomez was TERRIBLE. KSG probably was the best of the 3 IMO.

None of the musical numbers were memorable other than the vag song which will surely go down as one of the most INSANE scenes in cinema.

That's not the truth, Lucille

Three films hold the record for the most Oscar nominations, with Titanic (1997), All About Eve (1950), and La La Land (2016) all tied with 14 nominations each.
