Alright they gagged me a bit with
the Torgal reveal :disco: Is he a dominant? Is he FENRIR???

Although the reviews were fairly good the fan reaction hasn’t been great. I was going to play this after I get back from my holiday, but apart from a good story it all sounds a bit shallow?

Shallow? Definitely not. The side quests mechanically are usually just fetch, but they flesh out the world excellently.

Combat is anything but shallow, and the world is great too. It doesn't have the end game/post game content you expect (there is no superbosses as far as I'm aware) which is a shame, but I'm sure that will come with DLC, but even still, it's the best standalone Final Fantasy since X, easily

I've also seen very positive fan reaction so don't know where you've been looking.

I’ve been reading reports of no depth to the combat system, stats, weapons etc. No elemental damage, beautiful but boring environments not worth exploring and dull fetch quests most people say to just avoid.
This is mostly reddit but all over the place really.

My most recently unlocked eikon (Titan) feels like it's letting me properly explore a different playing style, as it's focused around defensive play and guarding at the right time to create openings. It feels like a real breath of fresh air at the point of the game I'm at!

Also I hope I'm not the only one who spams the Ignition ability when there's a crowd of enemies around - it's so satisfying to basically turn yourself into a guided missile and collect them all as you zoom around :disco:

Learn how to counter with Raging Fists, it's my single most used ability.

I am a branded, yes.

I really can't get over what a THRILL this track is, I might post it in that songs of the summer topic:

Well, the battle against Bahamut ending with Clive and Joshua doing a Dragonball-style fusion so they could fight Bahamut in OUTER SPACE is probably something I should've seen coming, but I didn't so was fully amazed and agog at what I was experiencing :disco: Though I'm slightly disappointed that the evil mum ended up just being normal evil rather than demonic evil, I was very ready for her to turn into a ridiculously overdesigned angel thing and fight me as is customary for this series :(

I have just got all of the eikons, and when I was fiddling around in the menu I noticed that I seem to be able to set attacks from eikons I don't currently have equipped (but not every attack seems to be available to do this with). Is it just the ones you have mastered, and was I always able to do this or did it just unlock at this point of the game? I had just been thinking the other day how nice it would be if I could mix and match a bit more, and now here we are.

Excellent! I was sometimes finding that I like an eikon's unique movement ability but would rather have the attacks from another one, so this will be very useful :disco:

Only joking! I enjoyed it a lot, despite a few NIGGLES - I think I need a bit of time with my thoughts before I share them.

And platinumed. The single Eikon challenge stones were a bit of a slog, but otherwise hugely enjoyed the experience.

And now a week of gaming detox before losing my life to Baldurs Gate 3

THOUGHTS INCOMING

I largely enjoyed the game, but I do feel like there were issues with the way it was structured that led to problems with pacing. These massive world-affecting events would happen, then because a load of sidequests would open up you'd be collecting flowers or looking for someone's passport for them five minutes later :tongueout: There was this drip feed of sidequests among actual storyline stuff, and because the sidequests were one of the few ways of reliably getting experience and ability points (as grinding regular enemies didn't seem to give much) I felt like I had to go do them all as soon as they opened up. A lot of the stuff that opened up just before the end of the game really shouldn't have been optional content, as there was a lot of stuff in those that should've probably been part of the main story.

I liked the story for the most part, it reminded me a little of FFVIII in that
large portions of it make more sense in retrospect, when you understand that there's a villain heavily influencing (and sometimes literally possessing) various other characters.
Some characters felt quite underwritten (HI JILL), and I sometimes felt like the desire to make a Game of Thrones 'realistic' style world led to there being a bit of a lack of proper FF-style whimsy and, yes, fantasy in a lot of the locale and character designs.

Also - and I take no pleasure in saying this - for all the pre-release stuff about this game having a mature and political story, and complex themes... it still loses out on both those fronts to the original Final Fantasy Tactics (a game from 1998 where said story was told by cutesy sprites). Will Square EVER top that game? For me, I'm actually not sure :o

Was the move to pure action gameplay and a single playable character successful, in the end? I had a lot of fun with it, but I actually think it would've worked just FINE with FFVII Remake-style party switching. At the very least it would have been nice to have a more robust assistance system... I'd have made it so that outside of battle you could change which one character you could give commands to, then in battle the Torgal menu becomes a Cid menu or a Jill menu or whatever (but you could still only have one at a time).

There was a free update yesterday - just some alternative costumes and a weapon glamour system:

It has also been confirmed that two pieces of paid DLC will be coming in the future...

DLC announced:

Two 'episodes' - one available now, the other in the Spring. Both set just before the end of the game, which is slightly disappointing - I was sort of hoping for sequel or prequel stories with different characters.
