funky's journey through the 90s (again, again) (1 Viewer)

Half-sister yes, or step sister via her half-brother Eagle-Eye Cherry... I forget the link.

:D I'm like the 9th most knowledgeable person in my own thread and that's from a sample of 8 people.

I had no idea Titiyo had a chart entry in the USA.

Come Along should have really been a UK/US hit. It was big on the continent.

Deleting the account was very necessary, but the less we say about it, the better; no drama except Amy Grant lesbian related. I never lurk, like what's the point; if I don't post, I'm not around. But I was curious about this thread, which is fantastic, and as I suspected, lots of great songs missing, lots of trivia facts ignored. It definitely needs the Alla finishing touch, and you know it.

Glad to see you back! Please come back to my thread too. The Amy Grant LEZZA RUMOURS seeped over there too after you left :basil:

Can't post images and can't post links, how am I supposed to bring all those hot charts facts? 🤦‍♂️

Trying to post exclusive data that you can't find online (for real) but I can't attach a picture or add links, I must be detected as spam for some reason.

I'm guessing it's to do with your new post count and permissions?

You have to have a certain amount of posts to do that stuff

10/10 AND NO NOTES

To attach a picture? I don't want to spam to reach what, 100 posts? Oh dear

I think it’s 200 but not sure. Call it a PENANCE for abandoning us :D you’ll just have to keep posting in here!

And of course Longing for Lullabies is just one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Her vocal on it gives me chills.

This is one of the most underrated pop songs of all time. It is incredible.

I'm giving up if it's 200  I have a picture to answer one of your questions, because the answer is not online, but I just can't. 200 is too much, but I understand it's because of spam.

You’ll get there quick enough! Just keep telling me about SECRET LESBIAN TRYSTS

Not an expert in that subject. 🤷‍♂️

I don't want to post trash just to reach 200, maybe this wasn't a good idea o_O O_o o.O O.o

"Hippychick update": sadly peaked at #14, but "Tom's Diner" leapfrogged it and is still climbing by Christmas at a new peak of #5. I'm curious how US radio positioned that song. Such an outlier for them.
As you suspected, Tom's diner did better in sales. I can finally check how well did on the radio. Top 10 airplay in the US is quite impresive for such a record.

This month's inclusion of the "Wait, they were a hit in the US?" - Stereo MC's and the KLF.
They removed the gunfire from the beginning because of the Gulf War, btw. Among the list of banned songs that wouldn't be played on many US stations for a while.

Two other songs that were huge hits in the US because of the Gulf War and were ignored here:

Styx, the band that were big in the 80s, had a surprise comeback hit in 91 with Show me the way. It was helped by a special mix done by a radio DJ with tv calls and comments by soldiers. Patriotic Americans found it irresistible and the song peaked at #3 in February (or March).

Who knew that stars of their time like Kevin Costner, Richard Gere or Whoopi Goldberg had a gold record in 91? Well, sort of. Under the name of Voices that care, a hundred of stars including actors, sportmen and singers released a song with the same name, to help boost the morale of U.S. troops. The single went gold and peaked at #11 in May. The list of stars is amazing, even Jean-Claude Van Damme is there singing. Well, in the chorus, lead vocals were by proper singers like Luther, Michael Bolton or a newcomer (in the US market) Celine Dion, she had the right contacts from the beginning. Unpopular opinion: it's actually a good song!

Tevin Campbell's "Round And Round" misses the Top 10 but becomes a huge crossover hit, hovering around the charts for a good 6 months. Quite normal from the mid 90s onwards, very unusual at this time. It peaked at #12 in its 18th week.

Written by Prince, it features on Prince's Graffiti Bridge album but he is uncredited on the version on Tevin's debut album. The album was a platinum smash in the US, with 6 singles released including a Top 10 hit. He looked destined to join the R&B explosion of the 90s but, aside from a relatively successful follow up album, he never really translated into a household name, and never crossed over in Europe. He did have some moderate success in Australia.

Yeah this was a case of pop radio gradually discovering and adding him, that why it spent so much time in the chart. He had a decent chart run during 3 or 4 years, until he had to rely on r&b radio. His first hits were really good, up until 94/95, but his subsequent albums were so boring IMO. Btw he was actually discovered by Quincy Jones, not Prince like some people thought. He sings in the Back on the block album. He was what, 10 years old?

Discoveries:

OK so we have to talk about this song, one of my favourite discoveries so far:

I do love a dramatic soul vocal, so while this took a couple of listens to grow on me as I had no idea who she was, it's definitely a keeper now. While it sounds very typical late 80s / early 90s power ballad, it reminds me of the ballads from En Vogue's EV3 album in 1997, which had more of a general pop-rock sensibility. Lisa Fischer only released one album, which produced two hits in the US but didn't trouble Europe and might not have even had a release there. This song reached #11 in 1991. Lisa featured on various soundtracks and guest spots on other artists' songs throughout the 90s, but had no follow up album. A shame because that's a GREAT voice. Wiki tells me that this song also won a Grammy in 1992.

Glad to see you like this, what a song, what a woman. I immediately bought the album, decent but nothing to this level of magnificence.

And yes, she won a Grammy tying with QoL Patty Labelle for best r&b singer. You can see Patti saying "nah, I'm not winning, I should be at home eating waffles", which is understandable because Aretha has been winning forever. And then they read her name, but also Lisa's, and there's a moment of confusion where she's like "shit, did I win or not?" :D:disco: Also appreciate Lisa's outfit :disco:

And making artists connections, what about this: Lisa Fischer does background vocals for Luther Vandross in Here and Now, his first top 10 pop hit, covered in this thread. Patti Labelle will record Here and Now years later for a tribute album to Luther.

93 — BACKYARD –•– Pebbles ft Salt n Pepa

Big r&b hit that didn't crossover, and that was the end of Pebbles' career. Look who appears in the video, a year before their first hit, when they were still BFF with Pebbles before that bitch stole their money: TLC. I checked to see if they actually do vocals in the record, just to find out it's actually After 7 singing background vocals. No woder, they're Babyface's cousins, all in the family. TLC will also make (much later, when they already have a couple of hits) a random cameo in Whitney's I'm every woman video, where they don't provide vocals either. I love Backyard.

God I'm obsessed with this crazy bitch Sister Perri, a.k.a. Pebbles. This fascinating read is from LA Reid memoir. In case you don't know, Babyface's partner produced her debut album, and they got together and later married; she was still married and he had a girlfriend, but nothing was gonna stop Sister Perri :disco:

Don't miss this insane story, featuring a young Paula Abdul.

Has Pebbles ever commented on this sort of behaviour now she's a nun or on how she ROBBED TLC BLIND? Or is it just THE LORD working in MYSTERIOUS WAYS?

She said everything in that TLC biopic is false and the only thing they got right is that she wears Chanel bags. I think she sued them, the audacity.

As far as I know Pebbles has maintained she is nothing but truth and virtue and every story told on her is a lie from the devil. :D
