Old TOTP (BBC4) (3 Viewers)

Quite bittersweet to see that lovely and vivacious performance from Dana Dawson.

I don't recall this Gayle Tuesday character at all. I'm guessing she worked better in other formats. Or perhaps not.

I seem to remember there being some Lee Hurst fronted variety show around this time with music and comedy, was it Friday Live or Saturday Live? Gayle Tuesday was on it every week along with Harry Hill. There was a bizarre episode where Leslie Ash and Caroline Quentin performed a song, right before… Ray Charles.

I feel like Gayle Tuesday did a show with Lily Savage at some point? Or maybe they were just on something together at one point and I've created a false memory, it wouldn't be the first time :tongueout:

Yes, she did. And they toured together as well.

Any particular reason Kylie didn't show up to perform Where Is The Feeling?

I like it, but if ever one of her singles needed all the help it could get...

Dodgy's "Staying Out For The Summer" is actually OK, to my immense surprise.

Muting Bon Jovi so I can watch the chart countdown. Ah, the privilege of modern technology.

"Michael has let us use this exclusive video mix!" I wonder how 'exclusive' it was...also, "Scream" sounds really limp today.

You can imagine the gammon fury at Annie Lennox's TOTP appearances of 95. 4 blokes in lipstick and dresses???

If ever a song didn't need covered it was "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", mind you. Pretty weak sauce. Almost enough to make you reach for her Christmas album. Almost.

Dodgy and Cast remain the absolute worst of my memories of BritPop. I’m sure there were worse that were less successful, but absolute nails on a chalkboard for me.
This is the thing, that's my memory too. Which is why I'm surprised I quite enjoyed that. I was recently subjected to Cast without my consent and my memory of them being unmitigated shite was confirmed as accurate.

U2 were fun in the 90s. Then they went all serious again. Boo. They really did make some great records and some appalling records.

'A Girl Like You' basically made him his money as a proper international hit. He was broke before this - Pete Wiggs of St Etienne remembered buying an effects unit from him so that he could pay a bill.

We must be getting to then end of East 17's chart run by now...we only have the duet with Gabrielle to come in terms of actual proper hits, don't we? This one is bloody rubbish.

I might have been a bit hard on 'Scream' on second listen. It has a genuine groove. I wonder how much you could turn that video in for now tho'. Probably about 50 grand.

D:Ream rewriting Things Can Only Get Better and inadvertently writing Let Me Entertain You in the doing so.

Terrible version but it's only there so Vic & Bob can fanny around.

I was all ready to skip Julian Cope, but it's alright.

I liked that REM song, I had totally forgotten about, too.

I make no apology for playing Boom Boom Boom each week. I know it's sexist nonsense, but it's pure nostalgia for me.

Remarkably Craig McLachlan was one of the more tolerable guests presenters. The outfit was quite the choice, but it worked for me.

The oiled up dancers in trackies, are quite something. Never change boys!

The Chris lead vocal is of course highly notable.

I don't recall Tricky using the same sample as Portishead. I'm sure there's a Bristol related story there.

*tries to tag lolly*

It's a real testament to Ant & Dec's popularity in the 90s that they were able to keep their heads above water with some of the dreck they put out as PJ and Duncan.

That Boyzone performance explains why they quickly phased out the uptempo numbers. That dancing! :basil:

No idea of anything specific.

The Massive Attack/Tricky connection is much stronger as Tricky was a founding member before going solo. And Geoff Barrow of Portishead worked on Massive Attack's first album.

Obviously that's a few years before these two singles, but I imagine they were very much still moving in the same circles.
