Rina Sawayama - Hold the Girl

Having my first listen now, and as usual I wish I hadn't listened to so many of these songs before release :tongueout:

Imagining is also incredible, what a run of songs! Also:

:disco:

The little Storyline snippet things about each song on Spotify are very good.

Hurricanes is really good too, but like the other pre-release songs it'll probably take a few listens for me to understand them properly in the sequence of the album.

The whole thing is really strong on the whole. As an album it definitely feels intentionally more commercial than Sawayama which is somewhat a shame but if it helps her crossover more then I’ll take it.

Jesus CHRIST at this album.
Just got to this one, yes LOVING IT :disco:

Holy (Til You Let Me Go) is the other early favourite of the newies

Send My Love to John and Catch Me In The Air aside, this is all sorts of :disco: :disco: :disco:
Send My Love To John reminds me of Madonna’s X-static process. It’s quite pretty but yes there’s much better here

Send My Love To John is very sweet, I like that she's writing about aspects of the queer experience that aren't just the standard 'accept yourself' empowerment type of thing (as important as that also is).

Best opening three tracks of an LP in a while and LOVE Holy and Imagining. I can't wait to get to know this album 😍

I was going to buy an LP but Fopp had a few things I wanted so a CD it is.

I shall report back in due course.

Your Age is good, but it's no 29. Holy is potentially REALLY good...

Imagining POPS OFF!!!

MA'AM!!! how was this not a single? :D

Couldn't she have least done that to a beat though?

cwej repeatedly talking about some kind of mainstream crossover for Rina, is that a running gag like me and PRETTYMUCH

I haven't listened to the whole album yet but Imagining :disco: :disco: :disco:

I have a general thesis (it covers Carly Rae too) that some pop is just a bit too much for most straight people - a few too many ideas, one too many banging hooks to process per song, that sort of thing - to really hit the mainstream, and Rina is absolutely the kind of artist it covers.

Based on first listen only. But I'm about to listen again right now

I was innocent when you said I was evil
I took your stones and I built a cathedral
Found my peace when I lost my religion
All these years I wished I was different
But, oh, no, now I know
I'm holy till you let me go

It’s gonna happen. Watch.

I mean it will drop like a brick by week 2 (and possibly even before the end of week chart) but... No.2 is not to be sniffed at. The hype is massive. Every review is insane.

The album is alright, Hold the Girl is the most instant track but I’m not finding the rest that captivating.

Seems like it could hold on to at least top 3?

Also that’s kind of disappointing for Marcus Mumford I think

Looks unlikely she'll fall out of the top three, I'd agree.

As they are all new entries they are likely to all be frontloaded, but it looks like the floaters like Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran must be far enough behind to not threaten her.

Very close between her and Suede but a bloody good result for both, should things stay as they are.
