Severance (Apple)

I thought that was an incredible episode after being quite skeptical they’d pull it off after what was quite a disjointed season, thankfully it did all come together. The letter from Dylan to his innie made me very emotional, and the ending was great. Only complaint is we didn’t get any OLD MAN YAOI!

Anyway they better use that Apple money to deliver season 2 in exactly 10 months I’m sick of these streaming platforms playing nasty in my face.

Anyway religion and the cult of Kier has been quite a theme this season so my current theory is that severance’s ultimate goal is to get Kier’s followers into heaven by severing the sinful parts of themselves (like what they did with Burt)

Really enjoyed that finale! Cobel decided to give us some answers with more than enough left to keep us going for Season 3.

Poor old Gemma now has a lifetime of feeling what Marks been feeling since her “death”. Well done everyone.

Been watching both seasons over the last 2 months and caught up just in time to do the finale this morning. I concur with the people saying some of the pacing is a little off - but overall it's definitely intriguing and there's enough twists and turns to keep me interested.

I find Dichen Lachman to be absolutely stunning to watch on the screen - she's captivating as Gemma, often with next to no dialogue. I do find a bit of the acting to be variable though - I don't rate Adam Scott or Zach Cherry at all in their roles - Cherry in particular doesn't convince me at all whenever he's playing any of the more emotional stuff with his wife.

Even though I've commented on the pace being a bit off, I didn't dislike the Cobel episode at all - I felt like it gave some interesting back story.

Overall, the show reminds me quite a lot of both Lost and The Leftovers in the tone of what they do and don't tell the audience... Are we supposed to understand
why they were making Gemma do all those rooms and why Cold Harbour would be her death? Or is the reason they did that still to come?

They were testing the efficacy of the chip blocking her different feelings and emotions when she went into each severed room - which is the files they were building on the computers. So pain (dentist maybe?), fear (the plane crashing?). Cold Harbour was the final test to see if she had any response to dismantling the cot - this was the last thing they did together before she was kidnapped when she couldn’t conceive. I presume Lumon are wanting to go mass market with Serverance and enable it for micro events humans don’t want to experience - as tested by Gemma.

I think there was no use for her after Cold Harbour so they’d have to kill her. They did kidnap her so what are they supposed to do with her? She was her outie on the testing floor so she’d go back to the world with full memory of being in there.

It’s not clear why they chose Gemma/Mark specifically but Lumon were involved from the very beginning when they were giving blood through to IVF. Maybe they seem to think grief/not being able to conceive is the ultimate emotion; Keir does seem quite big on fertility and was alluded to in the finale he’s a big shaggin’ machine.

Oh thank you so much!! This is really clear…

But can I just ask: did everyone else get ALL that or is it just me who missed some of that?

Well that was fucking AMAZING

I can’t believe some people thought that episode was slow :D it was fucking BONKERS!

Oh, my TikTok is just increasingly unhinged theories about what's going on, so all of the above seems normal and tame.

The internet seemed convinced that Helly is pregnant, and that Cold Harbour was more than just checking that Gemma was fully emotionless/memoryless, but about creating a body that they could transfer the consciousness of Kier into.

They also thought that Gemma was going to have her consciousness put into a goat. I still don't know why they have the goats or why they need to die though

@ZenGiraffe how can you have been disappointed by Mr Milchick this episode?

He gave us the most incredibly perverse choreo ever witnessed on television!

He is the character I most love to hate right now in all TV. The pursed smiles, the fake pleasantries, he’s perfectly maniacal. I do love that he finally lost his shit though - that scene in the bathroom and his Wolverine pounce onto the fridge was peak diva :disco:

Jesus Christ trying to use the spoiler function on an iPhone is SO painful

Hate is a strong word, but you could cut every scene he was in out and nothing of value would be lost, except that scene where he runs away suddenly.

He's one of my favourite characters too and I just feel they wasted him just being random for random's sake. It was a massive set piece that just did nothing for me really, nor do I think it particularly served the story either.

I found this season a slog, but they pulled it back in the final episode. I hope they correct some of the pacing issues. As much as "world building" sounds like a lovely early Game of Thrones-esque aspiration, it only works if you don't delay absolutely everything until the last of ten hours of content.

Oh and why did they all have signs to point at the ceiling that no one would have seen please?

I would like to see his story expanded next season. I felt like they planted a few seeds, when we got to see him alone, his insecurities about not being good enough. Is he a child of Keir like Cobel, or was he recruited? Is he also severed when at work? (I assume not as we have seen him outside).

I think they’ll go further with him in S3.

A good final episode after the season stalled in the second half. I too was fully expecting Gemma’s consciousness was going to be injected into Emile!

The most frightening thing about it is just how HORRIDLY REAL all the corporate bollocks has been, from the awful "motivational" videos to the bullshit bingo speak to the ridiculous bonus gifts to the stupidly long appraisals. I've found all that incredibly TRIGGERING.

Like my boss last year sitting me down to inform me of my PALTRY raise then following up by letting me know our health insurance now has MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT. I’m going to need it on THAT SALARY!
