The UK: The Keir Starmer years (2 Viewers)

The only thing I feel at the moment is that they’ve not actually done MUCH.
To be fair they did sort out the junior doctors contracts which is small fry in the grand scheme of things

And they’re sorting out flexible working (will be enshrined in law soon)

And we will have more green energy too

And I agree with you re: winter fuel thing

So I’m happy so far

Have they had a bad start? I couldn't give a flying fuck about free clothes and the only MP disowning them is a rotten TERF. They've been honest about the horrendous state the Tories left them in and frankly I wasn't surprised.

I don't read the papers but I'm sure they've got plenty to say about them and will continue to do so until the day they lose power. That's what a Labour government endures in this country. Accountable criticism by the left and unhinged criticism based on lies by the right. Social media platforms are now almost entirely a tool for the far right movement, so media influence and propoganda is at its worst probably in history. Which is ironic when we live in a world of open platform information and free news.

HEY HO
Totally agree. The free clothes thing is just right wingers clutching at straws

Much like the US, the media goes looking for things to complain about because they don't have mask contracts for mates or partygates or cabinet ministers taking liberties and second jobs controversies... it all feels very lightweight. The expectations are never EQUAL.
well no shit. why would they be? we expect the worst of the Tories and we expect a Labour government to perform a lot better. it's not unreasonable to actually hold them to those expectations.

and yes Starmer has already contrived to have an "accepting gifts" controversy. his response to it neatly sums up a lot of Labour's problems - they just don't seem to understand the optics. he's saying it's impossible for him to sit in the stands at an Arsenal game so he has to accept the VIP box worth 10k or whatever it costs. it's bullshit. either sit in the stands like Corbyn does or watch at home on your TV.

you can't spend years in opposition roasting the Tories for everything they've done that's self serving... and then immediately open yourself up to being accused of being shamelessly self-serving... all while cutting the winter fuel allowance. Arsenal don't score own goals but Keir and team can't help themselves. at the very least he needs new PR people because the current lot are shit.

it also alarms me somewhat that people (political analysts, Labour insiders) regularly say things like "Keir doesn't really do policy" - because (i) why become PM if you're disinterested in policy detail (and so much of governmental politics in general is policy), but also (ii) it most likely means people like Rachel Reeves have a huge amount of power and not much accountability.

I do think any new government needs time to get things moving properly but it's not encouraging. let's see what this budget brings. they can't afford to let Reeves present austerity 2.0 and package it as medicine for the funding black hole. nobody gives a fuck about cutting the deficit right now - public services are cut to the bone. major and widespread investment is required, with long-term funding commitments. tax the fucking rich. if Labour can't offer that... the country need not have switched governments.

Sure. But I was talking about the media, not public opinion. I agree with you on the latter. But on the former it is, as ever, entirely unbalanced what we expect a Tory government to be and a Labour government to be.

I find it depressing honestly.

Maybe I'm simplistic but here are the people I'd take money away from https://www.news.co.uk/latest-news/the-sunday-times-rich-list-2024-is-out/
Just a little bit of tax won't hurt them, I'm sure multi-billionnaires like James Dyson can er, suck it up.
Together with a message that the standard of living is going to get better for everyone, old or young. Give us a bit of hope.

Instead we get "sorry everyone but everything is shit, it's going to get shitter, and we're going to freeze some pensioners". Along with that dreaded phrase "we're all in this together" which has been uttered from the comfortable thrones of the rich and powerful towards the peasants they're about to squeeze harder, throughout all of history. This isn't a royal We when they say that nor does it even include themselves, it's the same We that my manager uses that translates to "You" because shit flows downhill. Seriously whenever someone in a position of power says "we/our" in the context of "Tough Decisions", always always translate it as "you/your". "You're all in this together". "You're all going to have to tighten your belts", and assume that it's addressed at the poorest and most vulnerable.

The optics of the winter fuel payments is awful and is just handing out free ammunition, surely it could just be made fairer and add some positive spin like politicians usually do.

And then they wonder why people love someone like Farage who okay, we know is a racist frog-faced waste of blood and organs, but who a lot of people just see as something a bit different to just two different brands of Tory and a very minimal change following a handover of government.

The endless stream of fantastical conspiracy theories about Kier on Twitter are rather desperate. I've seen he's a bigamist, in a relationship with Lord Ali, he's a cross dresser. Where were they during the election campaign?

Surely their rubbish comms department and doom and gloom vibes are more than enough to go with.

The budget really is where this government really kicks off. It's been fairly quiet, what with the election happening just before summer and therefore the negative policies seem to make headlines and conspiracy brews. They need to keep the headline machine flowing.

Labour's problems is a deffos comms one, they've not really done a good job of communicating what they are doing right, and the right wing media are already looking to put them down in any way shape or form, but hopefully theyre going to drop some absolute BANGERS in the budget and we can all be happy idst

One GOOD THING I noticed today which I hadn't realised was happening is that restaurant staff are finally going to keep all their tips. BY LAW.

Nobody ever wants to talk about these things. And when they are mentioned they are drowned out on social media by bots and paid influencers sharing conspiracies and lies

I 100% believe that the rise of the far right in some countries is directly related to what is happening on social media. And we’re all walking blindly into a very scary future.

I remember people warning about social media when it first started and I dismissed it as just a bunch of old luddites complaining about something new. Although at the time it was pretty much "what you had for dinner", I wish I'd listened and not gone near any of it. I just wanted to watch Stephen Fry making excited posts about iPhones :(

Thats not a conspiracy theory its a proven fact.

And the sad fact is all these tech-bros are inevitably skewing right. Musk first and now Zucc.

I'm not being a fantasist when I say that in 5-10 years I will be offline and done with it all. I've got a roadmap out of society and I can't wait.

Post a thought-provoking picture of RACHEL REEVES

There seems to be a fair bit of resentment within Labour that it's a bit JOBS FOR THE BOYS under Keir Starmer, so naturally she's been replaced by Starmer's mate Morgan McSweeney.

“We’re giving you Nations Sue!”

“Not good enough!”

“You can also have regions?”

“Oooooh, ok, fab.”

The Envoy for Nations and Regions? They just made that up didn’t they?

They really just wanted to get her out of their way in Westminster and worked backwards from there to come up with a job title.

He was pretty much trolling with that appointment anyway. Except he was so busy giggling at how the Tories would take it, that the sausage-faced pranny didn't consider that his own MPs might get the hump as well.

If they are going to keep planes going there, I don't disagree. That airport is about 3 times smaller than it should be for the traffic.

Look, I don't like him and him getting free clothes was ridiculous, but surely this is a nonsense story?

She had to cancel her concerts a couple of nights before, and I read elsewhere was considering cancelling the London dates too. Intervening to protect her and keep the concert on is surely the correct decision?

You’d think Wes would be outsourcing his job to some expensive CONSULTANTS, rather than asking the MOSTLY THICK AND WICKED GENERAL PUBLIC.
