Omg, so annoyed at Sonia giving it all away so quickly. Reiss even mentioned the lock up is where the house was, practically handing the location to her on a plate!

How did Bianca get out though??

Ruby dies. They announced when she came back that she was around “until the anniversary” so maybe they’ve brought her back to be killed off, giving Martin a child in the process.

That would be killing off a “big” character who isn’t just Reiss which would be a cop-out, but it wouldn’t be a shortsighted killing of a legacy character like Martin or Sonia.

Martin’s dilemma could still play out the same way but with him choosing Stacey over Ruby and them both living with the guilt of that.

And COME ON GUYS… it’s the 40th anniversary. The RUBY anniversary! The ruby red has been all over the branding - they’re giving a massive clue.

Sonia gives birth in the live episode whilst trapped in The Vic. Could be a case of she gives birth, dies and the baby is saved!? When is the live episode? Is it Wednesday? If she is leaving next week then it needs to all be tied up by Thursday so I suppose technically she could just say she has had enough and set off in to the sunset in the back of a cab with her baby but it would be quite the DAMP SQUIB. I don’t think Ruby is beloved enough to make it BIG CHAT on the 40th wedding anniversary. 🤔

By the way, to save us all of this incessant spoiler chat, we may as well just say that "someone" dies next week as it's in all the publicity material, and everything else is just our own speculation. Hope that's OK with everyone!

So now that we have that out of the way...

Wednesday is an hour long episode but Thursday is the live one. We don't know exactly when Sonia leaves. It may well be her exit next week but she could still be in it for a while. They've been deliberately vague presumably so that it's a realistic prospect that she's killed off.

Thank god as I don’t know how to do spoilers properly so need to keep quoting then copying and pasting. 🤦‍♀️

Yes they have said her final scenes will air around the time of the 40th anniversary so technically she could depart a few weeks later.

Do we think Ruby is headline grabbing enough then? Everything else @Pingu said makes perfect sense but I just don’t think I would really care all that much if Ruby died. She hasn’t really been integrated enough back in the square since her comeback, nor was she ever someone I really cared about.

I think the ones we know are departing on or "around" the anniversary are Sonia, Ruby, Reiss and Stacey.

We can probably comfortably rule out Stacey, and I think to kill off someone like Sonia they need to be really confident that Natalie Cassidy never wants to return, or that there will be a lot of subsequent storyline potential like there was with Lucy. I like to think that they've learned from the Ronnie and Roxy fiasco when it comes to killing off legacy characters.

Reiss is the obvious one but would be a bit of a cop-out, and Ruby is big "enough" to be seen as a major character but also her death wouldn't really disrupt things too much for other characters.

I didn’t know Ruby was leaving so yes, I agree with you now. IT’S RUBY.

It doesn't really "need" to be headline grabbing in itself though I guess - the headlines that matter are the ones that get people tuning in on the week, so it's enough that there's a "chance" it could be someone major like Sonia or Martin.

What's much more important than headlines outside of the show are the repercussions that are felt within the show, and I hope they've learned that a major character should only be killed off if there is more storyline potential with them dead than alive (which I guess was the case with Lucy and Denny, but PLEASE NO MORE CHILD DEATHS).

I won’t really care about a Ruby death. For the 40th I would expect to be GASPING INCESSANTLY like I was for the Kathy return on the 30th Anniversary.

I also hope it's not Martin, although I guess I can see them doing it if they wanted to make a big splash. It would be neat tie-in with the first episode when Pauline found out she's pregnant with him, it would make all of the stuff with the market and putting him at the centre of it make sense, and he's not exactly the most interesting character in his own right.

That said, he's such a central character to the show's history as part of the original Fowler clan, and I really would like to see him and Stacey finally end up together once Lacey is done with yet another maternity stint.

I can understand though if they think it would perhaps make Stacey boring in the long run and they would rather she suffered another tragic loss than actually put them together.

I still think they just want people to THINK there's a risk of Martin dying than actually going through with it though.

Has anyone thought of the possibility of it being Phil? That would be seriously major! How does this fire start? Could it be a repeat of this, since he’s been hallucinating Peggy?

Then you have Grant and Nigel back with an easy reason to piss off again. Maybe a compassionate early release for Ben to be recast.

I have to hand it to them, this week has been great so far and DOES finally have the feeling of building to a big anniversary.

Also, Chris Clenshaw's most miraculous achievement may be managing through the course of his tenure to make Billy into a likeable character who feels central to the show thanks to things like the Lola storyline and properly establishing his family, rather than a spare part with constantly ridiculous side-stories that everyone wonders why he hasn't been axed.

It feels entirely appropriate that the anniversary is centred around Billy and Honey's wedding.

It's particularly pleasing because Billy is a similar case to Yolande (at least up to last year). Genuinely one of the better actors on the show routinely being poorly served and shoved aside by the writers.

They surely have to outdo the 30th for the 40th?
I'm trying not to let myself think that's possible, because in a way they've made it impossible to top. The Lucy storyline was set in motion 10 months previously, they had a whole week of live episodes, they don't really have a character as big as Kathy they could bring back (I mean there's Ronnie and Roxy but that would be fucking ridiculous) and more people were watching back then to begin with.

I just hope it stands up really well on its own as a proper event week of episodes, and there are a couple of real surprises or shock twists in there, which I fully expect them to be able to deliver.

If this week is anything to go by I can only imagine it will be amazing but for the people that are likely to tune in for the live episode and nothing else I would imagine it has to be someone well known and BIG.

Unfortunately I would think it is very unlikely to make 50.

Where’s GUS?

Also surely this is prime time for Shirley to come back. Maybe with Darren and Heather’s baby George.

I have just went down a bit of a rabbit hole and noticed that AUNT NELLIE is still alive at the grand old age of 103!!

Tonight was good as well. Phil is such a top tier character. He's definitely not dying.

The old starting credits were a nice touch.

The actors and the casting team involved with the younger Mitchells are outstanding.

However, can people think of a different song than A-Ha's Take On Me as a semiotic to the eighties :eyes: The song is so well known and used so much that it might as well be a contemporary song. As a suggestion Elaine Page's "I Know Him So Well" was number one when Eastenders premiered.

Excellent use of Strawberry Switchblade however.... and the line '22 and on the sausage' 😂

Also, the casting of young Phil is fantastic.
