Selena Gomez - I Said I Love You First (March 21)

I do wonder if just marketing this as a new Selena album would've been smarter. the joint artist/boyfriend as creative partner angle is weird when nobody seems to like (or know) Benny Blanco AT ALL

The rich musical tapestry of Dear Ben can't be compared to this twee nonsense. Scared of Loving You literally sounds like she's singing over a royalty free ukulele instrumental.

why aren't the Marias credited if they sing the majority of it? the NERVE.
they are now credited on digital and streaming apparently.

Meanwhile it rises to 42 on Apple Music, and rises to the Top 50 on Spotify US

Oh it’s doing objectively terrible, all things considered. I just meant the increase in streams on day 2 (and 3) was interesting.

I suppose i am less disappointed with it thinking of it as a side project than a proper new Selena album. But agreed that it would not have been quite the flop had it been billed solely to Selena (notwithstanding the lead singles being mediocre). It’s clearly a vanity project built around a concept than the music though.

I Can't believe Benny Blanco gave us some golden bops in the 2010s could only come up with this wet fart; I love how Selena is so cynical she doesn't even try anymore and she's not afraid to hide she's a shit singer.

Well sales are actually surprisingly close to Rare in the US. Expected to debut with 96k, which seems quite good.

UK result just ok, but her biggest opening week to date in the US

This is the first Selena Gomez album I've ever listened to. Mostly just out of curiosity, it didn't make much of an impression.

I know she's been a major pop force for over a decade, but as I've frequently bemoaned, she's almost totally passed me by to a remarkable degree for someone at her level. But it does feel like, thanks to Only Murders and Emilia Perez, she's much more broadly famous now than she was the last time she put a record out. Maybe I'm not alone and that accounts for the relatively strong opening week?

I will always find her success fascinating or maybe the bar is set too low these days and people like her out of nostalgia/people having goodwill towards her
