Final Fantasy 7 Remake & Rebirth

I played about 5 hours and then went away for the weekend so back to it on Monday, but it’s just magnificent.
I’m going to 100% the grasslands before I move on but I just want to soak everything in.

Gongaga is GORGEOUS and the music is absolutely everything. Also, the main plot sequence of this chapter is :disco: and :ShockedSenhit:

Y'all are killing me. My copy comes TONIGHT

Hurry Up GIF

Just started it last night. Is there much to do in chapter 1? Or is it mostly linear with very little side quests? I just hope I'm not rushing it

Don't worry about Chapter 1. The things you pick up don't carry forward, so whilst there is some very nice materia that you can play with in chapter 1, you'll lose it when things start proper.

I'm finding the combat so confusing. Have they always always been this many buttons and combinations?

And does Block do ANYTHING? Or maybe the battles are just too quick and I can't time anything.

Any advice on how to use the combat system? What are the most reliable moves? How do you time shit? How do you avoid taking damage?

I would focus on just getting used to Cloud initially. You can time his blocks to take no damage, and if you block melee attacks in his triangle mode, he'll counter attack.

Make sure to use assess on every enemy to get hints on how to do it. Firebolt blade, which is on the first weapon you'll find for Cloud, is an excellent move.

Once you are used to Cloud, start switching characters and normal attacking to build their ATB, and then you can use that to exploit enemy weaknesses.

Find Chadley asap, he has combat practice fights

KindaCool do the battle simulator and there are a set of fights that walk you through the basics again and then all the individual characters move sets. I found it really helped me get back into the combat again.

I just adore this game so much (having reached Costa Del Sol).

I love the fine balance between broadly knowing what's going to happen in terms of the main story beats, yet every inch of the world being brought to life in new ways.

Yes, we could probably have had a straightforward remake in a single game that would've been an impressive update of the original. Remake was good, but it didn't entirely make a convincing case for splitting the content, given there was a reasonable amount of padding. Rebirth, however, proves why this has been the right approach. Every location - even those that previously existed as one or two screens - has become a landmark, and I'm not sure that would've been the case in a single game.

And I've finished the story.

Definitely preferred it to the first game. And the extra stuff throughout is broadly an improvement on the source material.

The third game can't come quickly enough

Ugh the existence of this game is really making me question my life choices right now :argh:

The fact we decided to give it all up and live and travel in a van for a few years (meaning consoles - like everything - had to go. Thank god for my Switch) and yet THIS is what makes me doubt what we're doing :D

I look forward to posting my experiences in here in ten years.

If the gap between releases is the same as the last two, maybe I can play them back to back

UTTERLY AMAZING THE TITS SPLENDID SHIT

So far

Yuffie and Cait Sith definitely benefit from the story padding; they're both much more sympathetic and likable than first time around.

I'm still kind of hoping for some more of the Remake supporting cast to make an appearance. In particular Marle; after only late discovering who her voice actress was, I have lived in the hope that she returns and goes all full-out RITA REPULSA on us.

I haven’t finished yet but surely Marle isn’t coming back in Rebirth? Half of sector 7 isn’t going to be killed off and then she’ll abandon the survivors and trot off for a romp around the world at the age of 95?

Who wants realism and sensible life choices in a game like this?

I want her at the Gold Saucer pissing the rest of her life away riding a moogle down a hill

Did you play the Remake Intergrade DLC? It does a great job of reintroducing Yuffie to the series and giving her a strong backstory leading up to her joining the party in the main game.

I'm just in the middle of the Gold Saucer/Corel section, and the game really does keep delivering. Probably the worst thing I could find to say about it is that there are perhaps too many mini-games, and some feel like an afterthought. Yet, most are optional, and even if you do need to play them to progress the plot, they're relatively quick and at an easy level.

I will be SHOCKED if there isn't a standalone Queen's Blood spin-off by the end of the year, offering online play and a wider range of cards that cover the entire series. I suspect there'll be the temptation to make it a mobile game with purchasable content, but I'd be quite happy with a mid-budget Switch title.

I just know that if I can't wait for the PC version then I'll end up spending close to £500 just to play one game (because there aren't that many console exclusives I care about, certainly not at console game prices, so my consoles always sit there gathering dust after their generational FF game).

But god DAMN are the reports making it difficult to wait.

I guess I could buy a PS5 and then sell it again, but the chances of me being bothered to do that and swallow the depreciation, fees and the fact everything I put on eBay gets sniped at the last second for less than it's worth...
Arrrgh

No I never did but I absolutely plan to now. I've always been a bit wary of VII side content, I never really loved much of the Advent / Crisis / Dirge additions (they've always been rather SOLDIER heavy, which I've found one of the less interesting parts of the VII lore), and had assumed Intergrade would be of that ilk.

I have no idea if it is still to come up in Rebirth (which I have not finished), but I am curious how / if they'll handle the Wutai side quest.

The original left it fairly open when you would start that quest, but I actually think that choice damaged Yuffie's character somewhat. It made sense if you did it on Disc 1. But if you left it until Disc 2 after she'd been with you through some of the really dark shite, her actions weren't just annoying they were plain ILLOGICAL.
Bitch, Meteor is going to DESTROY THE ENTIRE PLANET in a couple of days if we don't shut Sephiroth down. Enjoy your 48 hours of Wutai's "returned glory".

Wutai isn't in this game, so if they do try and put in the material theft storyline in the next game it's really going to be jarring. I reckon they'll have some extra plot or something to smooth it out (e.g. a direct order to Yuffie that she can't refuse)

I just got Yuffie’s Doppelgänger and oh my god :D
Why BOTHER using any other characters!?

Worryingly, it seems the game has underperformed commercially, certainly in relation to the critical response.

Rebirth's sales were down on Remake's in the UK (though the first game's launch at the start of the pandemic probably helped). It also opened with less than XVI in Japan before dropping 90% in its second week.

I guess there is always going to be some degree of diminishing returns with each entry. The official blurb for Rebirth on the PlayStation site says it's designed as a standalone experience for people who haven't played Final Fantasy VII before but COME ON. Nobody is jumping into the series here, SURELY?! :D

I'm playing hard mode now and whilst she's good, she's not in my go to party. Cloud, Aerith, Red is my team of choice, just like when I first played FF7

Yeah, but Japan in general isn't what it used to be for sales across the board.

I doubt it will have too much of an effect on part 3. The lion's share of the asset work is already done I imagine, it's clearly a prestige title for Square too, and I imagine the complete package will get a sales boost compared to the middle entry. Especially as after that they'll port it to Xbox and PC.

I don’t think opening with sales less then a game you really have to have played to understand the next part is a failure. It’ll do fine.

Fucking hell! :D

The side quest in Gongaga where you have to save the chickens from escaping and end up EATING THEM as a reward :D:D

Up to Chapter 12 now after 3 days off work and this game is so immense it’s ridiculous.

Also still loving Yuffie. Put her in a party with Aerith > Arcane Ward > Doppelgänger > Synergy=Comet > use action with party leader.
Watch it rain :D

Oh and also try using her with Plasma Discharge and Brunel form + mug and watch your PS5 have a break down.

Haste + ATB Ward + Brunel From, whilst wearing the Speed Demon accessory, allows Yuffie to generate an insane amount of ATB for others

This game is insane. I've spent a week in the Grasslands and barely made a SCRATCH :D

Mama Square keeping us fed :disco:

I am 160 hours now, and within touching distance of the platinum.

Just the two hardest combat sim challenges to go, which are ten rounds long each 🫠

I think I hit about 75 hours on the weekend after 3 days of leave. How do you guys have the time!?

Any advice on how to use Synergy abilities? Can't figure them out at all. What exactly is it I'm supposed to be using to charge them?

You can use the quick ones at any point by holding R1 and pressing the corresponding button. I’ve heard some of them are good for getting Tifa up in the air, but to be honest I don’t use them.
The abilities are a must though, and you build a little blue bar with each character every time you use an ATB bar. You need about 3 with 2 characters to be able to use an ability. That’s when the menu will become available and flash colours a bit like limit break.
The further you get through the game the more will become available and the more you’ll see the menu bar flash.

Each weapon has an ability (e.g., cross-slash) that the character can only use while the weapon is equipped at first. Once they become proficient with the weapon, they learn the skill, and can use it regardless of what is equipped.

It doesn't take long at all to become proficient (you need to use the attached ability maybe 5 - 10 times). I found the easiest way was to do a battle simulation with Chadley, equip weapons you're not yet proficient in and hammer that ability for the fight.

Yeah I've just started to get my head around it. It's really because no battles were lasting long enough to actually NEED synergy abilities.

I've finally reached chapter 12 and...

screaming at them basically just recreating Never Enough from The Greatest Showman, right down to Loren Allred providing Aerith's singing voice :D

Much as I have enjoyed the game, I'm sort of ready for it to end now. I'm about 60 hours in, and I've picked off most of the side quests. It does feel like even the developers were running out of steam when they created the final "open world" area.

I finished the story about a week ago at almost exactly 100 hours. I’m now going through and mopping everything up before a hard mode reply. I could play this game for another 100 hours and I’d still be happy.
