As for Kylie, I think it’s a shame they couldn’t get the interviewees to do full episodes. I presume if they’d persuaded Keith to come on (or even Davina for Word is Out!) then it would have been a lot different.

However, I think the reason there was so little to say at this point was that she just wasn’t around. If You Were With Me Now went entirely unpromoted- they mentioned it here, but there was no Top of the Pops, or any tv spot at all to my knowledge.

She’s also clearly not that fond- I don’t think she’s performed it live since the Let’s Get To It tour. I, on the other hand, adore it. It’s so lush and, as they pointed out, beautifully sung- it was her best vocal to this point. Absolute top tier, 10/10 Kylie for me.

As for the “hit”, it was a strange time where both it and Give Me Just A Little More Time were big in terms of their chart position but still felt like steps down in the scheme of things. Neither hung around for very long and I don’t remember much airplay or promo etc. It always felt like the third single should have been Finer Feelings, and I was interested it was slated for the second, but I guess it made sense to have an uptempo at that point. And would we have got the single remix if FF was second? I suppose we should have been grateful for that, but it still irks me that wonderful song never made our top ten…
 
Oh and also, I love the extended version.

OT: There is a “Let’s Get To It- Extended Mixes” version I downloaded on file sharing some time ago as, oddly, every single on the album had an official extended mix released except “No World Without You”, for which an alternate mix exists and they’ve used instead. It’s really very good and gave me a whole lot more appreciation for an album I actually loved quite a lot anyway.
 
I'm sure I recall Give Me Just A Little More Time having some longevity because it was largely bolstered by its use in that Accurist TV advert.
 
Give Me Just a Little More Time is the only LGTI single that I actively remember hearing at the time.

Its chart run was pretty much equivalent to any of the Rhythm of Love singles in terms of longevity, and obviously outpeaked all of them bar Devil.

I think releasing Finer Feelings second would have been a disaster TBH. Good song, but not commercial. It would have just given her two flops in a row, which would have been much harder to bounce back from in the midst of the wider SAW backlash.
 
For what it's worth, Give Me Just a Little More Time is also the most streamed of the LGTI singles by a big margin, and has pretty much the same number of Streams as Shocked (though the other RoL singles are some way ahead)

Interesting to hear the story of Keep On Pumpin' It.

Alison Limerick was a wonderful interview, very down to earth and funny.
 
Good to have the podcast proper back this week, after an interesting 2 Unlimited detour.

The reduced Stock Waterman output is really showing though, Shocked doesn't seem very long ago and now they've wrapped up the Let's Get to It album with Finer Feelings.

Looking forward to hearing about What Kind of Fool? and Movin' On next time.
 
I’ve been filling in the gaps on this podcast lately, as I tended to skip a lot of the episodes featuring less interesting songs/artists.

Take Me To Your Heart by Rick Astley is quite the treat, isn’t it? I don’t know if I’d ever heard it before.

 
I’m remember buying the 12” and being AGOG at the blatant borrowing of Inner City’s “Big Fun” which was still in the charts at the time.

 
They've covered What Kind Of Fool now. Only one Kylie single to go and not a particularly memorable one at that. :(

I still haven't requested that they continue on the Kylie journey - I probably should.
 
Also interesting to note that What Kind Of Food was very much an intentional throwback to pre-ROL Kylie, since it was part of her send off.
 
I really love What Kind Of Fool. It's a great throwback to the earlier years, but with the nice twist that she's now the one in control and calling out the rubbish object of her affection. The guy who directed the video was amusingly excitable :D

In contrast I thought they kind of rushed through Movin' On. Mike Stock is getting ever more grumpy but it sounds like we can put ABBA-banana down to Pete Tong rather than Uncle Pete and was amused by him describing the recording as QUITE TORTUROUS :D
 
I know they are very attached to Ian Masterson, but considering Julian Gingell is such a fan I wonder if the Nanas working with The Alias has ever been considered.

Kylie went on about it at the time as well if I recall? In fact I distinctly remember that moustached bloke who presented TV-AM perving over it.
 
I played catch up with the last few episodes of this on a long car journey yesterday and a few points:

Movin' On did feel a bit RUSHED, but I guess without Nana or inner circle input, there's going to be increasingly less to say- particularly if what Mike says about London not giving much of a shit by this point was true.

Mike Stock gets BITTERER by the episode. It's really quite amusing. It says something that I was ASTONISHED he thought Steps' Last Thing On My Mind was a good version.

The dreck is really beginning to show. Sorry, love but NANCY WHO? I can even cope with a bit of back story of The Fat Slags as it actually had an amusing tale to it, but christ, there was little to nothing going on creatively by this point, was there?

Gregg Masuak was GREAT value!


As an aside, on social media, I think I scrolled past that they've started asking if there's something they should do next. I would love them to carry on with Kylie, but I think it's more likely to go down what Matt/ Pete did individually. Can'trememberwhichone loves Steps, after all.

Where are they taking requests? Can you link me up please.
 
On the recent sneek peak episode they talked about doing epilogue episodes for the SAW story, featuring what they did next/Love This. They were asking who and what tracks they should focus on.

I would obviously love them to do a Kylie series.
 
Now they are getting to the end, I really am going to subscribe to the oft mentioned bonus material.
 
The only reason I could think of them not doing Kylie is the sheer span of time to cover. I’d feel daunted taking that on.

Has anyone her actually asked them?
 
They’re obviously getting to the fumes era now, but nice to hear the back story on The Love I Lost and When I’m Good & Ready - two records I have a lot of nostalgia for.

Probably speaks to how fragmented PWL was at the time that Eddie Gordon is very clear that he was West End, wheras Sybil claims to have absolutely no idea where the name came from. :D
 
I also revisited the TOTP perfs, and Donna Summer aside, surely Sybil has claim to be the best vocalist SAW ever worked with? I thought these were mimed until she broke out the ad libs!


 
I’ve started this as most of my usual podcasts are in a lull period and I guess I never really realized the “hit factory” really meant factory. So many artists covering the same song and getting them released with the same or similar backing track. This is really interesting to learn about.

I’m sure most of you all knew this stuff but, while we obviously had SAW artists releasing in the US, I don’t remember ever hearing much about the process.

I think you’re downplaying SAW’s achievements to be honest. I didn’t really get that gist from this podcast

Oh I don’t mean to imply that I’m just fascinated about the SAW process

I’ve only listened to two episodes so far
 
How many had a BASH at Who's Gonna Catch You, More Than Words Can Say and Beyond Your Wildest Dreams for starters.
