Dua Lipa — Radical Optimism (1 Viewer)

Why does everyone hate the video? It’s fine isn’t it?

The weird lukewarm reaction to this era is all a bit weird given it’s the first time she’s been consistently good for me :D

I love this and love Houdini which is still in heavy rotation in this household so 2 out of 2 for me.

Her stage presence being shit is part of her appeal to me oddly. It can be read as aloof, even though I'm not sure it's intentional.

This new one has grown on me with a couple more listens but don't think it will ever be one of my faves of hers.

The falsetto bits are the best, otherwise it's good but not great. i'm not sure it really feels like the single that's going to catapult the album.

i wouldn't call it a lack of stage presence, she has loads of it this time around. she just gives us deadpan energy which is almost her signature at this point. the grammy performance was probably one of the best pop performances at an award show in years.

Are the label panicking?

I don't pay much attention to record label politics but is this suggesting a problem?

I am wondering if she should've gone away for longer. I really don't know, I mean Future Nostalgia was hardly yesterday but then she had a huge summer with her Barbie track, so maybe it's all too soon? Do people care enough?
It was 4 years ago!

I really doubt there is any panic. ‘Houdini’ has been a hit whether people like it or not.

I was so confused because I thought I'd clicked on the Alexis Strum thread and then read THIS

Omg I genuinely didn’t realise it was 4 years ago and now I’m like… of course it was.

Where the fuck has that time gone!

To be fair she did release it when the world was in a VOID

I think this is fucking great. Even more immediate than Houdini for me which I have nonetheless grown to love. Danny L Harle has a real knack for creating hypnotic and addictive little moments with his production. On Houdini it was very obviously that gorgeous descending synthy middle eight. On this, I was immediately drawn to the repeating Basement Jaxx-esque stabs that bookend the chorus and the really effective use of piano throughout.

Reception-wise - I do wonder if the public at large have pigeonholed her a bit in their collective memory as a big tits out disco girlie? As people say, Dance The Night was about five minutes ago and thus is very LIVE in the public consciousness, and it has been four years since Future Nostalgia for which disco was the defining sound meaning that it has been EVEN LONGER since she had a big hit that *wasn’t* something in that vein.

unlikely to be a huge hit I'd say but this has stabilised nicely at the end of week 1

currently at 12 uk and 14 global. Houdini still top 20 global also

that's a shame :( I fucking love it and I've been RINSING it to hard! Justice for TS  and no, I don't mean Taylor.

Not a bad result but they would have been going #1's with these last two singles and is interesting to see Beyonce got there this week above her who hasn't had a #1 in 14 years

In related news she's coming across very well on Graham Norton atm

to be fair beyonce is entering a new imperial era and she's second probably only to Taylor in terms of cultural relevance currently. Dua has never scored #1 global debuts (and nothing from Future Nostalgia went UK #1).

they probably do want better but Houdini is still doing great. a big third single is needed.

not bad at all, but it's gonna drop like a stone. flirting with top 20 again on global spotty but no sign of real momentum yet.

it's apparently not the official single (yet) in the States, at least not at radio. I figure their best bet is releasing the album and seeing what takes off at streaming the most.

Good tunes can only distract from a charisma shortage for so long I guess x

Ouch!

Dua's great but I agree, there's still something missing. I thought she was good value on Graham Norton (apart from not knowing the difference between a scratch and an itch) but I stand by the opinion that she's like a beautiful model playing dress up as a pop star.

I really can't tell these days - how much of that is live vocals?

I am thankful for that tweet from AGES ago that started the "go girl, give us nothing" trend, she's never looked back and just keeps getting better.
