Gladiators (BBC reboot)

She was very liberal with the 'don't you know who I am card'. She had a screaming fight with my mum in a car park after she blocked my mum in and refused to move :D

Oh dear, did your mum not move out the way, I would if it was NIGHTSHADE? Not going to end up well unless your mum is Ronda Rousey :D

Watching this shit now, because Mr Ag has a nostalgia boner for it. I never cared for once I started realising boys were hot.

It's fairly compelling for light entertainment.

Yes we watched Big Break back then. I was certainly unaware Jim Davison was a racist pigcunt until later in my life.

Apparently Ulrika has claimed that the lack of cheerleaders is possibly down to wokery gone mad, but at the same time complained about being objectified on the show due to a forced skimpy wardrobe. I seem to only remember her wearing black jeans and perfectly normal albeit tight tops.

I've just remembered how hot Jeremy Guscott used to be. Shame he had a charisma bypass.

Well the UK series seems to be going well but the new Australian series is TANKING. Probably not helped that for all six heats they have the same four events in each show (Duel, Wall, Powerball, Pyramid).

Thankfully they are shaking it up for the quarter finals bringing in Hang Tough and, of all events, Tilt!

I enjoyed it more last night than the first week. Perhaps I've just settled into it more.

Bradley and Barney continue to irritate, though. Bradley is just being Bradley. It's not for me, but he's giving what presumably the BBC asked of him when he signed the contract. I read someone on twitter describe Barney as an AI generated estate agent, and it's easy to see why, right down to the slightly ill fitting suit. He's just utterly without any sort of charisma.

Barney is a personality-void. But even if he wasn't, the absence of a female presenter in any capacity whatsoever is baffling.

I'm not sold on those 10 second locker room clips, either.

I liked The Edge, too. Is that a new event?

Yes it's new. I liked it, even if it made the gladiators look a bit shit.

Contestants doing baffling things seems to be the theme of the series. When that lass stood up there celebrating that the gladiator fell, I'm sure 6 million people were shouting at the TV.

I think I particularly liked it because it reminded me of The Adventure Game

I loved this. I'm sad the ref told her, and didn't just leave her cheering and then standing up there until the time ran out (although it did still cost her points)

I think that girl might just not be all that bright. I’m less than halfway through the episode and she already accidentally claimed to be a one trick pony and announced that she loves handling balls, making the Walsh visibly remind himself that it’s teatime before responding.

Apparently everyone’s shocked the gladiators are on steroids (or were and conveniently stopped for the show).

Personally I don’t think you can tell

I gave this a go but I cannot get beyond the choice of presenting - Bradley is overexposed as it is and throwing his nepo-baby child into the mix is just indicative of such much that is wrong in the media right now. I also think this show needs at least one woman presenting (AJ Odudu would have been fun).

Gauntlet seems a lot easier for them than it did in the 90s, possibly because the gap between contestant and gladiator is a lot narrower.

Although having said that, the first round of Duel with Giant is back to the David and Goliath scenario.

The Aussie hosts are good fun, not least cos the guy is fit.

Gauntlet is wider than [finish this sentence yourself] so no wonder everyone is scoring top points.

Does Gauntlet give 10 points if both get through it?

They do need to narrow it a little, or at least make it so that the quickest gets 10 points and the slower only 5, like The Wall. Although obviously Gauntlet isn't done against each other.

Gauntlet just seems ridiculously easy. I'm sure they put Viper at the front because he's about as intimidating as a sock and easy to take a run at.

I know previously contestants weren't allowed to be held down, but it feels to me like perhaps John Anderson didn't blow the whistle for them to be released quite as quickly as well?

It didn’t do that well in episode 1, but had absolutely tanked by episode 2. So I think it’s more than just the events.
I don’t think it helps it’s an hour and a half long, and the whole thing is incredibly drawn out.

There’s one less gladiator. It used to be like this and there were tons of injuries and rule breaks:

Oh yes the drawn out nature of it don’t help at all.

Also the Aussie Gladiators need to get off their arse and stop sitting down on Tilt.

At least their series has had the sense to not bother with the over rated and boring Gauntlet.

Gauntlet is - and always has been - one of the worst events. Yet, it always felt during the original run that is conversely appeared the most, and that seems like it might be the case again because, I guess purely from a practical point of view, it's the easiest to set up.

I don't really see what skill it demonstrates. All the ram-rods, in particular, do is create momentum for the contestant to get past if they push against one side and then shift weight quickly to the other. That's what all of them have done so far.

Loved them beating the living shit out of the wholesome gay contender on Gauntlet this week, and pushing him right back to the start. Just as I was thinking how easy it looked, too

Following mentions earlier in this thread I've been becoming obsessed with Pyramid. BRING IT BACK

They said they went so hard on that guy because one of the Gladiators got 'unfairly' disqualified (I'm not sure what the giant foam pads are for if not to hold the contestant). But if that was within the rules, it begs the question of why they aren't that aggressive with every contestant. It made the event far more interesting.

I enjoyed this week's episode, as ever, but the Viper stuff all came across terribly. He's easily the worst part of the new series (yes, including Barney Walsh) and pushes the show into the realm of

Watching. This seems so scripted with the Viper fall and locker room 90s WWF malarkey. The gay could be a guy they plucked from a bus stop. The thighs on the army guy though..
