Make my wish come true?

Does this mean that the chart ratios will change given that doing a crisp advert is actively promoting the song?

I’m not sure. She did actively promote the song last year when she toured the Christmas concert, but it didn’t seem to count.

They're going all out for the number one the year, I reckon.

WHICH I'M ENTIRELY BEHIND

She comes across very well in both her viral video thing (which I LOVE) and that advert. Though in fairness, she could have eaten a bit more of the crisp...

I do like that she takes the piss out of herself so READILY

I wonder if she could pull off her third consecutive decade #1 these next few weeks. I think Madonna, Britney, and Janet have done it. Not sure if there have been others.

Isn’t it this year that it’s her best chance to do it in the UK, because of the way the calendar falls? Or am I making that up?

I think it should be - I mean its streams build in the week up to Christmas Day (Wednesday) then drop on Boxing Day (Thursday) but still at a high level, before really falling heavily from the 27th. As the sales week will be 20 - 26th, it therefore should have a really strong week.

But then this all means that its best week is the week AFTER the Christmas #1, doesn't it? Because the Christmas #1 will be the chart announced on 19th December, not the one on 26th, assuming we get a chart on Boxing Day anyway.

It was more getting to number 1 than the Christmas number 1 that I meant...

There seems to have been a subtle SHIFT in the last few years, particularly last year and this, from people thinking the song is a classic and playing it every year, to people (outside of the gays) thinking the song is a classic AND that Mariah Carey herself is an icon of Christmas, like Santa Claus or socks. That's the kind of goodwill her personal brand has been needing for a while :disco:

Then yes, it should. And as things stand (i.e. barring more chart rule tinkering by the OCC), the best chance it will have for a while. In 2020 Christmas Day is Friday, so its heaviest streaming will be diluted over two chart weeks.

What a JOY TO THE WORLD moment that would be

Still very wary of Adele

I think this is very true. I mean I don't even like her that much (well, at all really) for 11 months of the year - if she is even relevant then, anyway. But for Christmas I'd happily stick her likeness on the top of my tree.

As I believe I've said elsewhere, until someone releases anything better, as far as I'm concerned she can have Christmas #1 for the rest of my lifetime. Perhaps throwing the odd week once a decade to Kylie's Santa Baby and Have A Cheeky Christmas :disco: :santa:

She's actively advertising this year, re. the crisps deal so the OCC will doubtless endure a controversy of some sort or another when they call that one way or the other.

I still hate this song but, whoever left the tag "the fall have passed away" was spookily accurate. I;d stick a fiver on Peter Kay being dead or something.

Turns out I made this joke last year too. Oops.

I seem to recall this actually would have been number one the week BEFORE Christmas last year had it been at the smaller streaming ratio (can’t be bothered checking but it was definitely mentioned on here somewhere). So if it’s reset this year with her “promotion” of the song then actual Christmas number one is definitely within reach.

There's a physical coming out this year too. I've seen it reported as a picture disc and as a white vinyl 7". Given that the original "Last Christmas" 7" is being popped out on white vinyl too, we're clearly looking at a timewarp at the top of the charts.

Well there's your "active repromotion" right there...

It all depends on whether the record company requests it. Do they actually CARE? All signs point to yes but maybe it really is just chart nerds who are even paying attention.

I've done a bit of digging, just in case my memory had mixed up her AIWFCIY and Last Christmas...her website is offering US customers a full range of physical pressings of the single - 7", 12", CD, cassette. So maybe one or two of those are being imported over here or somesuch.

"Merry Christmas" is being reissued as a deluxe edition this year- believe me, the publicity of it being number one finally, is WELL worth an email/ phone call/ send a carrier pigeon/ whatever you have to do these days...

Can we move this thread into pop or divas? I can never find it. It's weird to have active discussion of a currently promoted single in here.

Anyway, up to 41 on US Spotify and 26 on global already :disco:

It seems quite fitting that this could be her last number 1

Could this finally get to #1 in the US too or is it not allowed to chart in the Billboard hot 100?

It did re-enter the Hot 100 last week at #39! Number 1 there is unthinkable, but last year peaked at #3 in the Hot 100, so who knows what Mariah can do this time :disco:

This hit #1 on Spotify on Saturday in the UK. In fact only 2 of the top 10 weren't Christmas songs.

Up to #17 in the midweeks.

That is fantastic considering we are still quite early in the season. She should get a good lead when things get in to full swing after this weekend.:santa:

I have a feeling she may well get Christmas number 1 this year. :disco:
