Old songs on the UK charts

Dirty Cash was used in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Along with these:

Songbird - Kenny G
Girl You Know It's True - Milli Vanilli
Girl I'm Gonna Miss You - Milli Vanilli
Blame It On the Rain - Milli Vanilli
Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
The Power - Snap!
Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
I thank you.

58 RE Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (132wks)
61 RE Wham! - Last Christmas (98wks)
Snow White Do Not Want GIF

It looks like it's the same week as last year that those two charted, although due to date differences it was 2 days later. It was Wham at #37 and Mariah #40 then.

The Monsters impact is unbelievable

As we head into Christmas I'm reminded why how much a Singles Catalogue chart would massively help this whole system. We can still recognise the most popular songs, Marah or Wham still get their number one every year, we can still have a christmas race, but new music is allowed to still thrive

I really don't get why the music industry doesn't push for this.

Exactly how much of a pervert do you need to be before you’re listening to All I Want For Christmas Is You on the 2nd November?

But I bet hardly anyone actively is. It’s the nonsense of the playlists being used in shops.

28 20 One Direction - Night Changes (22wks)
38 58 Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (133wks)
42 36 One Direction - Story of My Life (33wks)
43 61 Wham! - Last Christmas (124wks)
53 54 Disturbed - The Sound of Silence (40wks)
59 68 Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (144wks)
60 53 One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful (81wks)
67 77 The Killers - Mr Brightside (436wks)
68 65 Vance Joy - Riptide (156wks)
69 71 Coldplay - Yellow (41wks)
76 RE Brenda Lee - Rockin Around the Christmas Tree (74wks)
79 75 Fleetwood Mac - Dreams (99wks)
86 77 NSync - Bye Bye Bye (26wks)
89 100 Adventures of Stevie V - Dirty Cash (21 wks)
90 RE Pogues ft. Kirsty McColl - Fairytale of New York (127wks)
91 96 Tom Odell - Another Love (130wks)
93 79 Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (94wks)
97 RE Arianna Grande - Santa Tell Me (43wks)

OUT

48 53 Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over (18wks)
80 94 Journey - Don't Stop Believin' (107wks)
86 64 41 Liam Payne Ft Quavo - Strip That Down (28wks)
90 75 Rita Ora/ Liam Payne - For You (20wks)
99 RE Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark (39wks)

Well the Christmas rush, starts with more of a trickle than a wave. Not sure if it will persist, but Brenda Lee appears to be overtaking the Pogues in the affections of the playlisters public. The rather anaemic Santa Tell Me appears to be the one for those who grew up in the decade interesting music didn't turn up.

The only other feature of note is both Dreams and Last Christmas are a week away from hitting 100 weeks on the charts. Last Christmas will make it in 2024, but we'll have to see if Dreams has to wait.

It’s interesting how Mariah always seems to take the lead at the start but in the last few years she hasn’t had the legs to outpace Wham. The same used to happen with the Pogues but it seems like that’s fell off a bit last few years. Doesn’t have the same power it once had.

Sadly for the Pogues who seem pretty decent, they've become a victim of the culture wars.

Last Christmas actually already has well over 100 weeks on the chart in total. It's just that the original Last Christmas/Everything She Wants has 25 weeks listed separately from chart runs to 1987. The 99 weeks showing currently is from when it started recharting in 2007.

I will update immediately. The OCC are garbage.

She seems to have better playlisting positions in general on Spotify, so I suspect that's why she's charting better now. I do think that in the UK, Last Christmas is better loved on the whole - so when people are actively choosing to listen to Christmas music, they rise over her.

It seems to be from George’s death that Wham! have gained the upper hand, whether that’s related or not is hard to decipher. But as most playlists are US curated, they’ve certainly been more favourable towards it of late. Hence why Ariana wipes the floor with Leona whereas the latter is probably more fond to the UK, playlisting puts it the other way.

That and all the Mariah memes on November 1st puts it ahead before the rest comes.

I'd love to see Spotify curate more UK centric playlists, or just local ones generally, but whether people will navigate towards them is another matter entirely.

Most people looking for a Xmas party playlist in the UK would probably want Slade and Wizzard in there, but most people probably wouldn't think to check as there are that many Xmas songs now, and the youngsters are just as familiar with Ariana and Kelly as they are the 'classics', that missing the odd few doesn't make a huge difference to most people.

There are UK specific (or whatever country) playlists, but yeah the big ones are international which mean it’s more US centric. But I guess most people don’t view the playlist and just put it on. Which sucks, but human nature I guess.

Curses to the Spotify playlisters

We did a Christmas song rate AGES ago, I think I even totted the scores up.

Firstly, are you OK?

Christmas has hit the charts like a named storm. Only Coldplay, Killers and Fleetwood Mac have survived in terms of non seasonal hits. Dreams hits 100 weeks. I doubt we'll see them again until the new year.

Wham chart one place higher than Mariah, which I expect to continue. The Pogues have dropped to fifth place in terms of biggest recurrent Christmas hits behind Brenda and Ariana.

I've added the year of the original release, this week, so you can get a further sense of the age of the song beyond weeks tally, which only tells half the story. Here we see Bobby Helm's "Jingle Bell Rock" is from 1957, which I presume is the oldest song to rechart this year. Although I anticipate Bing Crosby will chart and beat Helms. White Christmas was first recorded in 1942, so that will be 82 years old, compared to Jingle Bells 67 years.

In non seasonal news Dirty Cash drops out but is replaced by a new remix at #44. This is the third version of the song to chart, if you include noted wife beater Dizzee Rascal reworking from 2009.

Not much to say here that won't be said in Xmas charts topic. Noteworthy that Carol of the Bells has charted. Do any other carols chart?

I still refuse to believe Bobby Helms (or Kelly Clarkson for that matter) is more popular than the Pogues or Band Aid. God bless Spotify playlist placement.

As I said last year (and probably the one before), I refuse to believe the majority of people even know that Bobby Helms sings it.

Helms suffered from emphysema, asthma, diabetes, and stomach problems. He began wearing an eye patch after losing sight in his right eye.

No wonder he's dead.

Explains why the record is so short. Any longer and he'd have shat himself in the vocal booth.

Good to see the Leona track emerging, this needs to become more of a top yearly staple. Along with Cher DJ
She's recharted every year, the peak being in 2019 when it got to #9.

But as said elsewhere it really is down to what's high up on the big playlists.

Although it would be interesting to see if they dumped Mariah and Wham half way down the list, if they'd still lead the pack.

I think we had quite the chat about this last year, but poor Leona really gets screwed over by Spotify being more US-centric with their playlists.

It's an unbreakable cycle, isn't it. Mariah/Wham etc are high on the playlists because they're popular but they also remain popular because they're high on the playlists.
