Ukraine 2019: WITHDRAWN (1 Viewer)

Secondly i will ALWAYS love Jamala for giving us the incredible TV moment of a SHOCK WIN singing a song about Russian genocide against the big bad Russia and their billion-dollar spectacle performance in the year that everything was really kicking off between Ukraine and Russia :disco:

The soul-purging HOWL during her winners performance of 1944 will never not be incredible.

This whole thing is a fucking joke. I feel for Maruv as she has been totally put through the wringer. She’s probably lost her career in Russia now anyway. Whoever replaces her is going to get a lot of flack I think. I don’t envy them. But apparently the act who finished second - Freedom Jazz also have performed gigs in Russia. So who knows what the fuck will happen.

Maruv has said she declined because she refused to sign the part of the contract which says she would have to perform for free at any event the broadcaster stipulates including political events and she said that she does not want to have her music involved in politics. She says the concerts in Russia which she was asked to cancel was not the issue at all.

FAIR PLAY to MARUV, but a massive loss to the Eurovision viewers of Europe.

I wonder whether this will put a shadow over this year’s contest. MARUV was rocketing up the odds - gay internet legend will probably have her down as the winner that got away regardless of who wins this year. I’m not sure if she would have been wide-appealing enough to win, but I’m sure she would have been a strong top 5.

In another twist, Sergey was MARUV’s coach and mentor on The Voice and apparently they remain close. IMAGINE another Russia vs Ukraine showdown moment of Sergey VS his protegé with all this political context :disco: now it will NEVER BE!

MARUV | LAZAREV - Siren Song

Rossiya, douze points.

It’s being rumoured now that Freedom Jazz have been offered it but have also declined in solidarity with MARUV

The broadcaster has said it will be one of the finalists, but what if they all decline :D

Also: slightly annoyed this Ukrainian HIGH CAMP POLITICAL DRAMA hasn’t been reported more in the UK press. The similar Mahmood drama got a few write ups, perhaps it’s been glossed over due to The Oscars.

SPOKE TOO SOON

Kind of hilarious the MARUV seems to be coming out of this as some sort of political martyr/prisoner considering what her performance entailed :D

Ukraine now officially WITHDRAWN from 2019 following every other finalist declining to go presumably in support of MARUV (although none of them have stated an official reason as far as I can tell)

MARUV has also done an interview here where she states she'd only be interested in representing Ukraine, and that she's sure she would have gone top 5 >

It also features this vaguely fabulous line:
By the way, you were invited to Moscow for the Eurovision party. Will you go?

-As it turned out, I don't have anything to do with Eurovision, although it's a pity they always have parties at the highest level. :disco:

What a shit show.

Good news for somebody in the first Semi Final though...

what a stupid twist.

is it just me or are artists (and all kinds of performers really) forced to sign absolutely ludicrous contracts nowadays? yes, the producers are giving them a platform but it's ridiculous what is expected in return.

How many times have a recent winner withdrawn? I can only think of Israel and to a more distant extent - Italy.

Ukraine have been shit for years. They finally turn out a decent song and then this happens. BAN THEM for undermining my efforts to convince people the contest isn't political anymore.

The hilarious irony being Russia are more likely than ever to be gunning for a win this year bringing back Sergei, and MARUV was potentially one of the strongest contenders to prevent them winning :D

I’m a little sad this is all over now. I haven’t been this gripped by a ridiculous pop saga since Sugababes publically executed Keisha

I think the difference here is MARUV being a reasonably established artist in her territory. Freedom Jazz probably would have signed it with no qualms had they won, but as she didn’t NEED Eurovision as much as them she was able to push back on it.

I guess it’s a bit like if we had sent Tom Walker instead of Michael Rice - he would probably have different contract demands due a level of previous success.

Russia essentially withdrew in 2017 with the whole Julia Samoylova debacle.

Serbia took 2014 off.

Turkey withdrew in 2013, ten years after Sertab.

What did @Zu-Klara think of this?

Oh don’t even start me on this horrifying debacle, although you can take a wild guess

EVERYTHING AND MORE :disco:

In a year dominated by male MOR nonsense, this would have been the outright winner. I'm sure of that.

100%!

The leg move GIF posted above has already popped up all over the internet. I genuinely think that moment alone would have helped push her to a win.
This year will always be a bit of a strange year knowing there was a genuine contender for the win that never got to compete.

I love how SINISTER the bit before the second "chorus" sounds especially when you know it's leading up to THAT.

Very late but this is really good. Investigating their other stuff too and not half bad either !

Oh they’re not cutting each other up, are they? I’ve not watched it all the way through yet. I call KETCHUP

I’ve watched it now :disco:

Madame really is setting a spectacular new benchmark in terms of deliciously high gloss seedy filth. And yet another DWARF! :horny:

With no real obvious favourite emerging following rehearsals, I REALLY wish this was in the mix this year  I still think it would have cleaned up.

Although I suppose Maruv's absence will only benefit the tempting sounds of TAMTA :disco: by default.

Looking unrecognisable here - our true chameleon KWEEN :disco:

Now we know what's out there I'm so disappointed this isn't in the mix. What a fucking STAR and what an incredible song.

Incidentally I've delved into the Maruv universe further and while much of it sounds the same (and why would I want anything different) she just oozes SEX and LEGS in a damp, dingy warehouse. It's sublime.

Imagine this fighting it out with the Netherlands this year :(
