I've probably said this before but I think mainstream music, the charts, and the consumption of music, has the youngest audience its ever had now. The days of people (women) in their 50s getting #1 singles are long gone.

I get your point entirely, but it's not like women in their fifties having #1 singles ever was a particularly common occurrence, was it?

have Cher and Madonna ever had a #1 post-50y.o.? I don't think Janft is shaking her boots tbh

'Believe' is the one that famously did it for an older woman. Wasn't Madonna just under 50 when she featured on '4 Minutes'?

I think Wham will get the Xmas number one now thank god. The only way Mariah will get it now is if she dies.

True but I just mean in the 90s and early 00s it didn't seem to matter - you had Rod Stewart rubbing shoulders with Kylie and Elton John in bed with Blazin' Squad.

A 50+ woman could get a number 1 again if it was some crossover smash like 'Believe'.
That was number 1 because it was good - and luckily Cher managed ho smear her jurassic claws all over it before it was released.

when she featured on '4 Minutes'?

21 years after their debut which would be like No Doubt having a #1 single next year :side-eye:

Mariah was 24k behind Ed this week, it's out of reach isn't it :(

Her streaming is going to go through the roof though, and I don't see that his will.

It's more a question of his sales. And the Eminem track he's guesting on. And Last Christmas.

In fact the Eminem/Sheeran track opened at #1 on Spotify yesterday, 120k ahead of Mariah, who was 22k ahead of Wham!

Eminem is also #1 on iTunes, so that seems to be the one to beat.

I'm hopeful that Eminem will peak early on both sales and streaming.

The OCC has an article that implies it's a three horse race between Eminem/Sheeran, Sheeran/and other and Wham!

Hoping that streaming will explode that should allow Wham! to triumph and also let Mariah remain top three.

At least the Christmas song domination means Kylie is back in the top half of the singles chart :disco: If she makes the top 40 next week she’ll have 50 top 40 hits :o

Oh come on, is Ed Fucking Sheeran realising a duet every week? Gutted Mariah won't be #1, but I hope Last Christmas still makes it.

Ed Sheeran is Christmas number one.

He’s also number two as a featured artist on an Eminem track.

Wham! were #3, and Mariah Carey #4.

The Spy Who Friendzoned Me
I remember when I met her
She was just a spy's secretary
With low self esteem and a flat in Hackney
Told her I could give her better
Turn those money pennies into pounds
If she'd be the secretary who shagged me

It's a smash.

Surely that list have to be quite long already, but still QUEEN.

I don't about that but when it comes to only Top 10hits she's the 5th artist to have achieved this, look below

  • All I want for Christmas is You' has become Mariah's 28th top 10 hit!
  • The song has inched closer to the top 10 every year
  • She is now tied with Stevie Wonder with the most top 10 hits on Billboard
  • She is one hit away from sharing the 4th place with Micheal Jackson
  • 1st- Madonna (38 songs), 2nd - The Beatles (34), 3rd - Rihanna (31)
  • This is Mariah's first top ten hit in 8 years! (#Beautiful only placed 14th ROBBED!)
  • One of few artists to hit the top 10 in 3 different decades (WHEN.WILL.YOUR.FAVS!!!!)
  • Could've been 4 decades if Vision of Love was released earlier
  • 18 of those 28 top ten charts have placed in the #1 position
  • AIWFCIY has sold roughly 16 million copies worldwide
  • The song has earned roughly $60 million during its entire existence and is the 11th best selling song of all time

This list is probably quite long but how many songs have been top ten hits in three consecutive decades?

In the UK I wonder if Bohemian Rhapsody could’ve made it, if it was released in the 70s

Edit: scratch that, it was a number one in the 70s and 90s! I thought the rerelease was in the 80s with a slim chance of a revival after Freddie’s death in the 90s but I got it the wrong way round

Fairytale of New York has managed top 10 in 3 non-consecutive decades: 80s, 00s and 10s. It re-entered the top 40 in the 90s but only made #36

Grease is a decent bet, at least for the 70s and 90s. I don’t think ABBA have had any big rereleases of singles

I thought after Christmas day people would stop playing Christmas songs. Unless is Mariah, I guess.

I assume the 8m figure is from Christmas Eve, though. So the figure released tomorrow will be for today.

I imagine it will still get some plays for Boxing Day, but fall off a cliff after that.

As discussed last year, who the fuck listen to Xmas music after the Queens Speech?
