I like it more than I did 20 years ago. On the surface it felt a little lazy, the lack of vocals and a lot of repetition

But the production on this song is amazing. D&D is the better song but this actually has a way more interesting take on early 90s club music. D&D is a gorgeous take on music that already existed but Erotica sounds so original and creative, even today.

At the time Erotica was criticised for copying the Enigma sound. Not entirely unfair to be honest.

But what is unfair is that I suppose Erotica will go down in history as Justify my Love’s inferior sister. They’re nothing alike. Madonna had sex on the brain for most of 1990-1992, and it peaked with Erotica. That’s all.

The journey of how it ended up the song it is quite interesting. One of the few Madonna songs with lots of leaked early demo versions

I do think they’re very alike in that they both lean into the ‘enigma’ sound, but yet, unlike other songs across Europe at the time that cashed in on the craze, Madonna’s takes are very creative. Plus, daring to sexualise the wholesome new age chill out scene must have been quite the thrill, we were just too young to notice.

Really didn’t gel with it on release, but it’s a solid track. Once the ‘you thrill me’ demo/remix sections appeared I was in love.

a classic, but not one I want to revisit much. the Confessions tour version however... :disco:

Utterly astonishing and almost entirely wrecked her career stone cold at the time. Airplay was basically fucked, the video obviously was never shown and the picture disc toesucking FURORE meant nothing but bad press.

THAT, my dears, is PRECISELY how you do it :disco:

I don't quite know when Erotica came into focus for me. Most likely when publicity was gearing up for Ray of Light via the music channels, but even then it was Bedtime Stories that would be my 2nd Madge album (because MVC were offering a discount on it if you bought the new one or something). It's a superficially stark slab of house to my ears, but really that and its album go for more playful pleasures than what her contemporary critics would have had you believe. A major case would be one review (Q maybe?) making out that Where Life Begins was the most depraved thing outside of a S&M porn set, and yet all I get are uber cutesy 60s dream pop vibes Saint Etienne would coo over. Erotica has texture and poise above melody at first, but it's a deep dive into something beyond where most other top 40 acts were inhabiting and the chorus is a sultry spiral into studio-stoned Madge bliss. To think that she would out-peak this peak with You Thrill Me just goes to show the care and devotion she once had to her music and how much it shows now more than ever. Dita was more camp than tramp and I love that she referenced it in her non-Vogue 50 questions video.

I don't hear it as much as FEEL it

Warm inside...

One of the best songs ever.

It captures that transcendant sense of gay sexual nihilism, where you know it's probably bad for you but you're drawn to doing it anyway.

"I like to do a different kind of UUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHNHHHNHNNNNN"

They can all go straight in the bin when it comes to THE NIGMA as far as I’m concerned :disco:
And to The Nigma’s first album I would add the first Electribe 101 album

Obviously these are hard choices against selections such as Get Together and other ones (:D) but there always has to be a winner and a loser :disco:
