Eurovision 2024: Semi-Final 1 (8pm BCT) (1 Viewer)

Shouldn’t they be disqualified for this? Poland will surely protest.

Just you wait till the voting results reveal Serbia kept out Poland by one point and gave Poland zero themselves :D

In my book Slovenia was always head and shoulders above the rest so I'm very glad she was able to cling onto that 10th qualifying spot or whatever :disco:

Surprisingly I thought Cyprus was one of the worst tonight, after seeing 18 performances it just felt extremely generic.

Sadly Australia tried to warm up the crowd but ended up attempting notes that were clearly out of their reach :manson:

Oh and Luxembourg's tigers and "fighter" graphics looked very gauche indeed (as in "straight out from Blanka's performance last year" gauche).

NUMBERS

Serbia
6th consecutive qualifier, extending their best ever run. 12/15 qualifications since 2008.

Portugal
4th consecutive qualifier, their best ever run. 9/14 qualifications since 2008.

Slovenia
Second consecutive qualifier, they’ve never managed three. 7/16 qualifications since 2008.

Lithuania
Fourth consecutive qualifier - their personal best. 11/16 qualifications since 2008.

Ukraine
Their 100% qualification rate extends to 14/14.

Cyprus
Second consecutive qualifier. 10/15 qualifiers since 2008.

Finland
Fourth consecutive qualifier, their personal best. 10/16 qualifiers since 2008.

Croatia
Second consecutive qualifier. They have never managed three. 6/14 qualification rate.

Ireland
First qualifier since 2018, breaking a four-contest drought. 6/16 qualifications since 2008.

Luxembourg
First semi, first qualification. Technically in the 100% club with Ukraine.

Australia
Second non-qualifier after Montaigne 2021. 6/8 qualification rate. (They were an auto-qualifier in their first year)

Azerbaijan
First back-to-back NQ streak. Three NQs in total (18, 23, 24) giving them a 13/16 rate of qualification.

Iceland
Second consecutive NQ. Qualification rate 10/16. Icelandic artists are curiously prone to flopping on their second go-around, with Hera joining Selma and Greta Salome in the club.

Moldova
Their three year qualification streak is broken. It wasn’t their best though - they managed a run of five from 2009-2013. Qualification rate 10/16.

Poland
They break a two-year qualification streak. People talk about the Polish diaspora advantage, but they’ve actually NQ’d four times in the last six contests. Total rate 7/14 qualifications.

A Petra joke we got on Monday that was seemingly cut yesterday.

Petra: Congratulations to Iceland’s Hera Björk for overcoming her fear of heights by singing on that staircase. I haven’t seen a Eurovision artist get that high since Dima Bilan.

:basil:

I’m not sure if it’s been posted already but Bambie being accosted by Israeli fans at the Euroclub last night was not a good look.

Ukraine has taken over Ireland as second most watched on YouTube, Croatia still ahead. Not sure how much these things mean historically.

Portugal second last I think :( But last is Luxembourg...

Natalia Barbu's first message after the Eurovision semi-final: "It's a political contest"
"It's very political and it doesn't matter because my piece is about light, it's about beauty and I'm sure I connected with a lot of people, but this contest is probably not just about that."

Sure, hun.

A more graceful concession

I've just broken out in a cold sweat remembering we were subjected to that three hour Ingrosso medley. What even was that music? Why did it come across like some sort of Christian pep rally? Not even convinced he was real. What a horrible moment in time!
So I was there last night...
...and I fucking hated every second of this.
Also notable, the huge number of Australians in the crowd? At one point I was hit by a giant inflatable kangaroo

The Benjamin Ingrosso medley was so weird. He did a respectable, but mediocre entry for Sweden several years ago (before taking his woeful televote into account!) and isn't particularly remembered by anyone outside of Sweden. It'd be like us last year dedicating a whole section to SURIE.

I can think of at least 10 Swedish Eurovision acts more on the gays' radar that would have felt more appropriate.

Sorry if already mentioned but I also read today that Loreen WAS meant to be part of the Johnny Logan performance but ultimately dropped out. :basil: :loreenbust:

Oh this is powing well above expectations already. A functionable side opener to open with.

Oh this is fast. Is it always this fast? Oh is this just the opener! Oh well. I did always like Popular.

OK so this is the official functionable side opener opening the show. The chorus has bounce, so does her hair and the semen splashes have splish.

Not a patch on GALA's dubstep (see the middle 8 of Taste of Me for details), but I like this.
