Eurovision 2025: Basel (17 May)

:o Was expecting Geneva! (And for it to be a week earlier! :evil:)

It’s about time it was in a German speaking city, I also personally prefer Basel as a city to Geneva :)

I'm a little surprised! Basel is situated literally on the border with two other countries so guests can stay in either Germany or France and save some of that oh so expensive Swiss Francs...

I wonder if the "Euro" element of its position will be incorporated into the theme somehow? I've only visited once but Basel felt quite "European" to me rather than "Swiss" if that makes sense.

I wonder if i still know anyone who lives in Freiburg? Haven't spoken to them in over ten years but I can be that annoying guy who gets back in touch with someone only to ask for a favour right? RIGHT?

But does Basel HAVE A SAUNA?

ALLEGEDLY.

I need to check if my acquaintances from 2015-2017 are still around.

I was expecting Basel due to the symbolism of being on the French and German borders on the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII.

Geneva was probably a touch *too* prohibitively expensive, and the whole 'symbolic city of peace' thing might have become a bit of a flash point in what's bound to be another year of discourse around Israel's participation.

Can we get the date in the thread title as well, please? It'll give me something to focus on in the winter months.

Oh I have an office in Geneva and had been planning to sleep in the broom cupboard.

Basel! The glamorous home of capital requirements.

Happy with the choice as we have some cheap accommodation booked just over the border in France.

And THRILLED with the dates as I can get out of a stag do I was due to go to that weekend.

Changes that have been implemented behind the scenes for 2025, according to the article announcing the Dutch participation:
  • appointment of a safety manager in the artist environment;
  • significant reduction of behind-the-scenes filming;
  • a 'safe space' for artists backstage where they will not be disturbed;
  • a crisis team consisting of representatives of the EBU, participating countries and the organising broadcaster, so that important decisions are taken democratically;
  • appointment of Martin Green as new Eurovision director to oversee these changes

Not definite, but it seems Macedonia are out again - the amount budgeted is more “broadcast rights only” rather than full participation. Caveat would be if they have a self-funded artist, I guess.

A motion on cutting local funding for Eurovision in Basel appears to have failed. It was forced to the vote by some weird religious group.

There were some alarmist headlines which claimed that there’d be no semi finals if the funding was rejected, but actually it was more related to stuff like Euroclub and Eurovillage, plus any other perks the Swiss might lay on for visitors.

Good news for those of us planning to further bankrupt ourselves by travelling to attend, anyway. :disco:

Who knew Switzerland had such an extreme Christian populace? Although I get the impression they just put anything to a referendum.

Either way hoping someone recreates Olly's sordid gay gym orgy in many churches.

I was hoping for a surprise relocation to Zurich as then I would go and put it all through work as my big client is there.

So BOO :(

I think the vote was triggered by a very small minority of extreme right wing Christians, but the rest of the 33% was probably just people being asked “do you want to spend your taxes on this thing you’re not remotely interested in that’s going to take over your city” and understandably saying no.

Good job not every host city holds a referendum on this, I’d imagine we’d have seen a few hasty relocations over the years.
