I was wondering who Byron Stingily was until he started singing then I recognised it immediately. My sister was a big fan of this and would spend most of 1997 singing "it's the weekend, come on everybody!". Which wasn't always appropriate, especially at Aunt Mavis's funeral. It was on a Wednesday too.
 
U2 then. Pop/Discotheque. Trying to make lightning strike twice is never a good idea and this proves it. Trying way too hard an clearly lost, Larry Mullen clearly hates every second of it and dressing up as the Village People comes off as snotty rather than celebratory.
 
White Town's Your Woman has to be one of THE great one hit wonders. Nice move making the barest of cameos in the video too. Apparently EMI dropped him before the year was out. Twerps.
 
Placebo are on again now and I realised that I know the lyrics to Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley's parody better than the original.
 
Again, archetypal January lull fare from Gabrielle, a cheap and easy cover of Walk On By to get her back on the radio.
 
Even Skunk Anansie going with a ballady thing for January airplay.
 
"Barrel Of A Gun" is a great record and, again, a brave comeback single but you can see things weren't good in Depeche Mode. Gahan looks pale and shaky, barely moving from his spot. Gore and Fletcher are even more sullen than usual and bringing their producer and photographer in to make them look more like a 'proper' band shows how insecure they were feeling.
 
Blur look even more glum than Depeche Mode with some very listless miming from Graham Coxon, in particular. Proof that they weren't out of the woods either.
 
For era that was relatively prosperous and peaceful, there was certainly a surprising amount of BLEAKNESS in the culture.

I guess when there's little else to worry about and there's money in the bank, we become indulgent and dabble in our most destructive vices.

This was the first release since Dave was DEAD for a minute from the smack, wasn't it?

I've got the "Ultra" album on vinyl & although it's been a long time since I've listened to it, I remember it being a pretty STRONG comeback. They have a good run of singles from it throughout this year.

There's some great songs on the album - Sister Of Night is just gorgeous and all of the singles were spot on. It wangs on a little too long in places and some judicious editing would have been handy but such was the CD era.

But yeah, Dave 'died' during the sessions and it nearly fell apart. It was Fletch who kept things together, doing the most work he ever did on a DM album.

I know the Bennetts are evil but Eternal really did have an incredible run of singles :disco:
 
Just seen they’re skipping the 28th March edition next week, presumably as it features an R Kelly video - which confirms fears they’re about to cut a huge swathe of these :( wish they could just edit him out
 
Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me is possibly my second favourite Erasure song after Always.

R Kelly had a zillion hits following up "I Believe I Can Fly" - if the policy is to cut all episodes featuring him & Diddy then we'll be at the end pretty quick :angry:
 
Kula Shaker's "Hush" ripped off the version by 80s Medway band The Prisoners, a much better group.

3 Colours Red with "Sixty Mile Smile" to join the pile up of Britpop also rans clogging up CD2 of the Shine compilations.
 
The Spice Girls at the PEAK of their powers & thankfully Lulu is nowhere in sight for this performance of "Who Do You Think You Are" :disco:
