Old TOTP (BBC4)

That Daft Spunk video was a clever way of making a pretty boring record look interesting. They did much better than this later on.

911. Absolute bin scrapings. My memory tells me they had one half-decent record..Bodyshaking?

I absolutely detest No Doubt. The only entertainment they gave me was all the people who bought this album and realised that nothing else sounded like this and were met with some desperately shite 4th generation ska.

Gonna watch James being James again then I'll do something else for a bit.

Mansun...generally a bad band but their prog rock album "Six" is weirdly fun if you're ever in the mood. Paul Draper is a weird bloke these days - recently subject to a restraining order too from an ex-partner too. Yuk.
I can't agree on Mansun being a bad band - I loved both "Attack Of The Grey Lantern" & "Six" - both packed full of great songs. Album #3 was a drop-off in quality, but always thought they were amongst the most interesting bands lumped in with the Britpop scene.

I had no idea about Draper's misdemeanours - I remember he added me as a Facebook friend back in 2007 as I had Mansun amongst my musical favourites on my profile - I think he was hawking some solo project that never got anywhere at the time.

That'll be the year that the top listener to Paul Draper on last.fm was Paul Draper.

I've no issue with "Bellissima" by DJ Quicksilver but I've never understood just why it hung around for so long. I preferred soundalike follow-up "Free"

Shola Ama really could SING :disco: both "You Might Need Somebody" & "You're The One I Love" suggested Dina Carroll-esque success but then OFF SHE WENT. Not sure if I read somewhere that she ended up with drug issues, or was she just lacking any other decent tunes?

Why do Republica insist on live performances on every TOTP edition when Saffron blatantly cannot sing in tune?

"Alright" by Jamiroquai aka the sort of song you hear playing really quietly on Capital FM at about 3am.

"Love Won't Wait" - Gary Barlow DULLS IT UP again. What a yawnsome solo career, every song shite.

Haven't heard the Marge version of this but can see why she chose to leave it in the VAULTS.

People who wang on at Harry Styles for wearing the odd frock clearly didn't live through the era of Robbie Williams doing everything but the limp wrist motion while gurning his way through the "Am I straight or gay?" line from Old Before I Die :zombie:

Bless Cathy Dennis. Obviously one of pop's greatest heroines, but truly one of the most wooden and charisma-free hosts I've ever seen :D

Maybe it's the bob, but I'm getting Jessie J-style irritant vibes from Saffron Burrows in this Republica performance.

I genuinely just did a jump scare when Michael Jackson popped up onscreen at his most FACIALLY ALARMING (up to that point). :D

Blood on the Dancefloor, utterly forgotten but quite the tuneless banger :disco:

YAS KATRINA :disco:

It really is a testament to what a pop cultural low Eurovision was at in the mid-90s that this only got to #4 in the end.

I was trying to figure out what episode that 1997 one was (found it here, 2nd May) and somehow the ones here by Michael Jackson and Robbie Williams weren't all that interesting, nor was much else. 1997 has long been a year that I'd like to go back to (before my existence) for the music, but not these in particular. 😅 Did the Teletubbies ever appear on TOTP?
Though I don't know much by Cathy Dennis, since discovering her 'move to this' cover I can't see a particular Enya photoshoot the same way (this) :D
Love Shine A Light made it to my Spotify Wrapped 2024 video  and I enjoyed Katrina at the end of course. 🤗 🌟

Before that I was watching this 1990 episode that disappears from iPlayer on Monday which I think was overall rather good (it was 'big hits' after all haha.)
The new discoveries that I quite liked were Lindy Layton, and Maria McKee (knew the song Show Me Heaven but not the singer) and also that Seal sang the first song, and Snap! did The Power too (and the sample from even further back) now famous on those B&Q and Tesco Clubcard adverts. :D
🎶 Who'd have thought both Sinéad and Tina Turner would be gone in 2023 😢🕊️

@octophone the Blur effect dragging Pavement themselves into the top 40 this week with "Shady Lane" at number 40!
Releasing two different CD singles probably had more to do with it. Their only other Top 40 entry, "Carrot Rope" was the only other time they played the marketing game.

Was there GENERAL OUTRAGE when the Pops started playing records that were going down the charts but had stuck around for a while? I don't remember but it does seem quite a radical shift in policy :david:

Christ, what a bizarre cacophony ’I’m a Man Not a Boy’ by North & South is! I’m quite enjoying it! :D

In my memory of hopeless C-tier 90s boybands I tend to mix them up with the far duller Northern Line, the only vaguely famous act ever to perform at my high school, though only the girls were allowed to watch them because the boys had booed and pelted stuff at them at other schools…

Even in a slightly half-hearted lip sync performance, This Is To Mother You caught me off guard a bit there. What a lovely song. With it not being on any of her studio albums I think I tend to neglect in my occasional Sinead binges.

If memory of the recent BBC Boyband series serves, Damage heavily alluded to this Wonderful Tonight cover being forced on them by the record company.

You can totally tell. Big hit, but totally passionless performance.

I know Radio 1 wouldn't touch it, but I still don't fully understand how the biggest Eurovision win in history couldn't propel Katrina & The Waves to #1.

STOCKING PROBLEMS?

1997 feels late for Mary J Blige to be making her first TOTP appearance. Though I suppose before (and after) the No More Drama album she wasn't really that much of a thing here compared to the USA.

I'm not familiar with the song.

Did the members of Olive ever do anything behind the scenes after this? One of the great UK one-hit wonders.
