Film critics are joyless bores lately.
Unfortunately I feel like this could be said for the movie itself.

I was really looking forward to it, but it was really disappointing. It was cute getting to see some of the characters and other bits from the Mario world on the big screen, but that's it. They weren't even trying for jokes.

I enjoyed it as a love letter to pretty much every era of the Mario games and with some quite niche references that still worked as plot devices even if they went over the audience's head.

I'm inclined to agree with criticisms of the movie itself as being fairly bog-standard and with some annoying Illumination quirks (the number of "Ma-a-a-a-ama Mi-i-i-i-i-ia" slow-mo shots, for example). But on the whole, I think it was caught in much the same predicament as Sonic The Hedgehog was. It can't just be a movie for the fans; there has to be some reach beyond that to define what the cinematic audience of the games is. Once that's there, they can go much deeper into the world of the games (as Sonic 2 did).

I would, therefore, expect the inevitable sequel to delve much deeper into the Mario-universe because despite how much fan-service content was crammed in, they barely scratched the surface and clearly held a lot back.

The gentlemen on the right are quite well-known adult entertainers

Neither :o who are they @dUb
They’re the hottest guy in amateur(-seeming) porn and this other guy (the Luigi one)

Maybe that’s not allowed in a SUPER MARIO THREAD

Little Kylie went to see this last weekend with his uncle and we've had the Peaches song on NON STOP since then :argh:

Really enjoyed this. It zips along at such a fast pace and they packed so much into it. I went to a 9.05am showing and it was sold out. Glad to see it has done so well!

I’m going to see D&D tomorrow at a big multiplex and I swear i don’t recall the last time one film DOMINATED the showtimes like Mario. It’s taking up like 6 different screens the whole day - I’m having to watch D&D in a smaller room!

Saw this today and thought it was GREAT, it zipped along and was chock full of fun little moments for the fanz. They were spoiled for choice for stuff to pull from but I love just how much the score took from the various games, it was a proper treat :disco:

Mixed reviews among the people I saw this with but I loved it. Needed more Yoshi though.

$677 million worldwide at the box office so far. :o

Is it when you’re into something you don’t realise how big something is?

Like I knew Mario was popular but not sure it was *this* popular. Wouldn’t be surprised if Universal just go all in with Mario at their parks even more than what they’ve committed to so far.

Still not seen this and will try this week. But I went to see Renfield at midday yesterday and followed by Dungeons & Dragons for a second time. The cinema yesterday was unusually busy in general even for a Saturday. For an early afternoon, usually even new releases are less than half full, but it was as busy as an early evening.

Loads of young families there seeing Mario, but the ones I saw were almost full too, and that hasn’t happened in a long time.

The cinema we went to here was NUTS on Saturday, it seemed like every other film was only getting one or two screenings per day and the rest was ALL this :o
