The War in Ukraine (1 Viewer)

I presume it's an exercise in drawing Russian defences away from stolen Ukrainian land.

Or if they're feeling really audacious they could go south and surround Russia.

I've only just discovered The Institute for the Study of War, which is absolute porn for "fans" of conflict.

They've hit a Russian airfield in Lipetskp which as far as I can tell is reasonably deep into Russia.

Putin doubles 'signing bonuses' for volunteers to fight in Ukraine

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled upfront payments for volunteers to fight in Ukraine on July 31, which may impact the economy.
  • All Russians who sign a contract with the army will now receive 400,000 roubles .
  • Regional authorities are encouraged to match the payment, with Moscow offering 1.9 million roubles for local residents.

Ex-Trump adviser Conway registers as lobbyist for Ukrainian oligarch

  • Kellyanne Conway has registered as a lobbyist for Ukrainian billionaire Victor Pinchuk’s foundation, as reported in a recent foreign agent disclosure.
  • Conway's role includes advocating for Ukraine’s interests and raising awareness about "Ukrainians' fight for freedom" amid the Russian conflict, according to The Hill.
  • Her agreement with the foundation involves a monthly fee of $50,000 and runs from July 25 to November 14.

This really is the best twist ever!

It really is.

I mean i wonder what the endgame is here. They must know they can't hold onto it.

My hope is they'll do this for a month, then retract and do it again somewhere else. and somewhere else. and somewhere else. Just keep fucking them up in random places. There's plenty of border around to start keep doing shitfuckery.

I wonder if it’s a case of coercing Russia to move troops from Eastern Ukraine to Kursk/the Russian border.

That's the general consensus, aye. It could also be a general destabilisation attempt on the regime.

I prefer the shitfuckery theory.

A great brief analysis from IISS on Ukraine's occupation of Kursk

Some notable things:

Ukraine has taken about the same amount of Russian territory (approximately 1,000 square kilometres) as Russian forces have, at huge cost, taken from Ukraine since October 2023.

[Russian] Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov initially reported that fewer than 1,000 Ukrainian troops were involved – one-tenth of the likely number. Parliamentarians have reportedly been told not to mention the incursion publicly.

The incursion has not fuelled a wave of patriotic fervour.

Russia is doing all it can to avoid drawing units from its own offensive in the Donbas. Instead, it is forcing conscripts from Kursk to sign military contracts and sending them to fight. It is also bringing in conscripts from Murmansk in the far north, forces from Kaliningrad and other resources.

There's also this very interesting article from Verstka, an independent Russian news source. It's in Russian though, so you'll need a translation extension.

Evacuated conscripts in the Kursk region are forced to sign contracts to send them back to the front

I see Russia went to fucking town on Ukrainian power networks last night. Really trying to push for a Trump inspired ceasefire and land claim by knocking out their power over winter.

Russia again giving it “this is an escalation and we will have to retaliate”

It's scaring me but I don't want to spread it as I know I tend to make my fears sound like opinions or predictions.

Read the Reddit UkraineConflict. Everyone on there is convinced Putin is all talk, his army is still shit and Russia are about to enter a Great Depression.

Given the way the wars gone I do feel that collapse from within Russia feels the likeliest way the war would end.
