The Weeknd - After Hours / Save Your Tears

oh so is AM Going to DISREGARD 2015-2018 weeknd material because he went pop? I'm all for him going back to sleazy pole dancing sexy songs but kudos to him cause he handled the Max MArtin stuff with panache and class :disco: love u am

what? :D i love that he's gone pop!
i haven't hated anything he's done, just haven't really cared much since i feel it coming which was more daft punk ft the weeknd than anything else.

It's nice enough, but it's a bit...novel. I hope his next album isn't going to be all 80s synth gimmicks.

His voice is his best feature, so I've always preferred him with simpler R&B production. Especially in a time when the only other alternative "vocals" are Shawn Mendez and Ed Sheeran :zombie:

I predictably love this but I only made it about a third of the way through his other new one. Not for me.

I much prefer Heartless to this. This has a great intro (even if it is a blatant rip off of A-Ha's Take On Me) but then it doesn't go anywhere for me.

Quite the chart run so far

12-17-20-41-11-10-8-4

It's also been #1 on sales for the last two weeks. Midweek #2 now, almost certain to be denied by Pieface Capaldi doing a Sheeran and releasing three different versions of his shite, with different limited edition CD singles.

once the beat kicks in around the 2:00 mark this new one (the titular track) is quite the blinder.

he's 2/3 so far - I'm excited for the album (the last one had some serious bangers on it, let's not forget)

the album is out today. here's the immediate highlight (produced by Max Martin and Oscar Holter) - beautiful sparkly but understated 80s dance-pop :disco:

the song that's being pushed is also from that team but is not as good imo

Loving "After Hours," "Blinding Lights," "Hardest to Love," & "Too Late" the most.

all of the remixes are nice enough (the After Hours one has gone into my HOT REMIXES playlist) but I'm not sure any of them are essential. I do like the voicemail addition to Blinding Lights mind you :disco:

I just asked in the Last 5 albums thread and then saw this one, should I be playing the new album?

read the comments above, gauge the number of people who listed in the last 5 albums thread and then take the monumental decision to start cherry picking from the album yourself to find out if you like it :) there's not much to lose hun

The first four tracks on this album are fantastic. I haven't gone much further as I keep playing them on repeat.

Chromatics :disco:

The post chorus 'HUY!' doesn't fit so well on this version though. I like the other remix too.

I actually much prefer the back half of the album. Blinding Lights through to If I Bleed Out is incredible.

The first half is good too (Too Late is great) but the songs are a bit too dark, heavy and melodramatic and start to bleed into one. Faith especially is just too much.

I have made it to the back half now, and I love it too. What a fantastic album!

i love the new life blinding lights is taking on with the chromatics remix (adore) and the christine cover. it's a great song and it sounds like a classic already.

jusy heard in your eyes and loved it. i don't know why i resist albums so much these days.

What kind of Covid craziness inspires you to release an album, then a deluxe a week later with remixes, then another week later a new version with three bonus tracks - one of which is as good as this:

I'm fully obsessed with In Your Eyes these days. It's the first song I want to hear when I wake up. What an absolute rush :disco:

it frustrates me a bit cause i feel like it never properly kicks off to the heights it could.
still i really do love it and he can ape a bit of mj any day as far as i'm concerned.

ps @Ellie, do you like the weeknd? what do you make of the mj comparissons?

Seems like an OK bloke but personally not a big fan. His SNL performance the other week was quite good. He sounds more like Peter Andre vocally to me.

Why can’t he just do a Taylor and make an ENTIRE album with Max. Just go ALL IN with this sound for ONCE. Save Your Tears, In Your Eyes and Blinding Lights have been in constant rotation for me for the past week.

God In Your Eyes in this weather :disco:

I LOVE his vocal on it so much especially the
“I always look the other way
I'm blind, I'm blind” line :(

Second best male popstar (after Orville Peck) since Prince :disco:
Yes, In Your Eyes is everything and that part in particular hits all the right spots.

I’m well annoyed he binned off his Glasgow date for the rescheduled tour next year :(

His Starboy tour was fantastic and it looked like he’s going all out production wise for the new one.
