Eurovision 2025: Basel (17 May) (1 Viewer)

I have been to Switzerland. It was absolutely delightful and I don't recall it breaking the bank. Although we consciously ate at Maccies and similar which seemed to keep the cost down.

My main memories, was the thrill of being surrounded by mountains, Lake Geneva, Lausanne, shops that sold cuckoo clocks plus a lot of public signage which prohibited roller skating.

Currently expressing interest:

Geneva (Palexpo (9,500 people max))
Basel (St. Jakobshalle (9,000 people max))
St. Gallen (some new arena (12,500 people max))

St. Gallen really would be the most provincial Eurovision host this century and pretty challenging to get to via international travel.

The arena in Basel hosts an ATP tournament every year and it's quite in the middle of the city, which is good plus it's a stone's throw from the German border. The concern is that the arena has also been in renovations from time to time over the last few years and security concerns have been raised. Airport connection isn't bad but not as good as Geneva.

Geneva feels like the frontrunner to be fair. Palexpo is right next to the airport, it's very functional (but not very pretty and quite a long way from the city centre). Plus it's a 100-meter walk from the EBU headquarters, so I'm sure they'd be interested in having that home turf advantage for the first time in ages. Best international connections out of the three (but the airport is one of the worst in Europe IMO).

Isn't there some big old venue in boring old Lausanne? A bugger to get to mind.

The Vaudoise Arena is in a suburb of Lausanne, it was the venue for the opening Ceremony of the 2020 Youth Olympics and could host up to 12,000. Mind, 1989 too place in Lausanne - it would be a bit odd to go back, kind of as if the next ESC in Germany took place in Düsseldorf AGAIN. :zombie:

I still don't understand why we stopped throwing them in stadiums :disco:

Most likely infrastructure and budget factors, if I recall correctly. Stadium or very big arena productions are significantly more expensive to pull off in terms of creating a good TV product. Admittedly that's less of a concern for BBC, SRF and to some degree SVT (even though they also had budget cuts) but when Albania wins, then what? It does come down on the HB when all is said and done. I kind of understand why the EBU was happy when Sweden went to Malmö in 2013 after several of those "bigger is better endeavours" in the second half of the 00s until 2012, finishing with Baku building the arena from scratch for Eurovision. 🙃

Hearing rumours Nemo's hometown got listed in Time Out's 'best Swiss nightlife' issue solely off the back of Nemo's TOOTHY BLOWJOB :(

A member of the Bosnian government got involved to try and find a way to settle their debts with the EBU and return but it sounds like it’s come to nothing:

I guess were the contest in Croatia next year it may have been more pressing to turn up - although Switzerland is home to a huge Bosnian community too. It sounds like it’s unlikely to see them back next year based on this.

everything you see on the stage except the stage itself, all the effects of the, as I say, the wind blowing in the hair of, say, a singer, all that is paid for. So these are extremely high costs.”

If they can't even make their budget stretch to wind machines, then even if they did return, we wouldn't be able to hold out much hope for big hoops, fibreglass rocks or impressive pyro :(

I’d imagine there will be fibreglass rocks and big hoops aplenty in the skip behind the Malmo Arena right now.

So who do we see being shoehorned into presenting or appearing at the finals? I suspect Roger Federer and Martina Hingis after Novak appeared in Serbia in 2008.

There’s an actress from Geneva called Kat Graham who is apparently somewhat known in Hollywood. Maybe they’ll drag her over, Malin style.

Ooooh she’s from The Vampire Diaries.

She’s released quite a bit of music but I really don’t love her voice.

Israel have confirmed participation :ToneNervous:

It’s always been quite clear that they’re not going to withdraw off their own back, it will take the EBU doing something (:eyes:) to not have them there

I'm not saying I think they will be kicked out, because this years competition has taught me to expect ZERO of the EBU. But, even in the few weeks since Eurovision, Israel seem to have kicked into another gear and I feel like I'm seeing more and more people/countries say "enough is enough" and start to take a stance. Enough so that I could see some countries definitely threatening to pull out if they're present again, which they didn't seem to do this year (or at least not before they were in Malmo).

It has TWO gay saunas! What a loss :(
