But overall a 10 because it just FITS together SO WELL
can i vote?
Fabulous stuff. And it also gave us "Has To Be" which just adds to its ACENESS.
Ellie how did you quickly work out averages in the film polls? Or was it not so quick?
Not being funny Ellie, but you listen to PRINCE. How can you POSSIBLY moan about vile screaming ruining a song?
I disagree. I can easily see how one can come up with the argument that Ray of Light is 'laboured' in comparison to her '80s work which can be labeled as 'carefree' but that is a bit ignorant. Then again, you do say it's the only Madonna album you've heard in full. True Blue and, more importantly, Like a Prayer both had 'serious' moments which cannot be lumped with her carefree stuff. Particularly the latter.
I find Ray of Light a genuine token of her maturity and growth. I honestly don't think she was faking or over-intellectualising any of it. American Life is where she stepped into that territory.
But those 'serious' moments in her 80's output were serious for a reason - Live to Tell for example is a truly 'dark' song and the seriousness that it's dealt with is appropriate. It didn't stop her from creating other, carefree tracks at the same time. You (well, I) can't help but feeling that throughout RoL she takes herself and her music so seriously, when in reality some of it is just throwaway nonsense (lyricaly in particular).
It looks like this in the spreadsheet: http://i30.tinypic.com/j6kacp.jpg
I don't know how Sild does it but I have to add up the totals manually.
I do it all manually.
As for Ray Of Light, I listened to it again late last year and it's not really that good... the singles are marvellous of course (the hideous Drowned World aside), but most of the album tracks are flimsy - and that's being generous.
