What are you gaming? 2021

Oh yeah I skipped the dream version as well. Only do trim after you’ve finished upgrading your nail and got your unbreakable charms fixed.

Can someone explain the combat in Horizon Zero Dawn to me please? I’ve done the bit where you’re 7 years old, grew up and I’m on a scavenger hunt for Roti which I get. But when I had to where a pack is with Watchers I just don’t get how the combat is supposed to play?

When I shoot the larger animals it triggers them all off and they all go fucking mental at me. What am I supposed to do?

different strokes for different beasts is all I remember. like the Watchers you have to shoot out their eye. the others have different weak spots, little boxes, cannisters etc. I seem to recall you can do some kind of scan to reveal weak spots? you can probably find information in the in-game beast guide/wiki

key word is stealth though, especially in the beginning. go for weak spots, traps and the like

@PercyPig honestly I avoided most combat because I found the same. I also used her spear a lot and just got in the thick of it which you're not really meant to do :D

Different machines have different weaknesses but I also tended to favour certain weapons and stick with them. I hardly bothered with traps and tripwires etc. Too clumsy.

I get that they have weak spots but is it really going to be a case that for the next 40 hours I’ll just have endure a rampage of enemies every time I shoot one? I don’t mind stealth but there doesn’t seem to be an option to be stealthy? Have I just not unlocked it?

Ooh! Maybe I'll actually play it this time. I started it, got to the first major fight and gave up shortly afterwards.

I can't remember why; it wasn't BAD. I just felt like I was playing it for the sake of playing a game that everyone had raved about. I felt the same way about 'The Last Of Us' until it clicked about 5 years after everyone else had finished it.

Oooh Control is for free this month on PS Plus, I’ve been meaning to play it for a while.

Gays I recently completed RiME, I was a bit hesitant at the beginning as it is a bit derivative of The Last Guardian & Ico but it totally won me over by the end and I even SHED A LITTLE TEAR at the end (not at the ending of the game per se but at the Thank Yous in the credits as they were really heartfelt).

I definitely recommend it, it's only 5-6 hours long so can be beaten in a weekend!

I also played Inside a couple of weekends ago and that has also stayed with me. Like RiME, all the story is played out without a single line of dialogue but it manages to be poetic and (in the case of Inside) HIGHLY DISTURBING.

It's only a couple of hours long so I'd recommend it too.

Inside is great. THE BLOB! they are working on a new game that I am really looking forward to

I'm really looking forward to Little Nightmares 2 as well. equally disturbing and parts that make your heart go a bit racey

So I finally beat Hollow Knight. Incredible game, easily one of the best of the last few years but also one of the hardest. Just doing a sweep up of things I've missed now. I beat Grimm eventually but the Nightmare version is IMPOSSIBLE, think I'll skip that :zombie:

It took me hours to do the final trial in the colosseum...the first two were done in 2 or 3 attempts without full upgrades etc, but jesus that last one went on forever...the bit where you have to stay in the air without healing for several rounds...dear god my sanity. Let it be known that these things are one of the most infuriating little bitches ever to grace a game:

360

:zombie:

And omg at the HELL of the White Palace. Is that the hardest bit of platforming...ever? I used the Hiveblood charm which to be fair I'm assuming was created entirely for that section since it's effectively useless elsewhere.

And yet...it rarely feels unfair in most cases. It always gives you the tools you need and there's always a pattern with bosses. Not that I didn't lose my shit many times.

@ZenGiraffe, really curious what the terrible bench was so far from the boss :D I actually didn't find any of that too bad, apart from the Mantis Lords, but I think I found lucky shortcuts in some places

My biggest rant was the boss up the tower that slams through the window. But the general philosophy of benches and wasting time angered me throughout.

I can't remember the length but opening up all the lifts made it a BIT easier. The Soul Master was actually pretty bad too (same area I think) due to those god awful teleporting ghost things.

Usually I just ran through as best as possible, there was nothing too long when you sprinted past the enemies. But yeah, the game is hard enough...no need to increase the agony by making you work to get to bosses.

Suffice to say I looked up plenty of strategies to help with some parts.

I’m liking Control. There’s a nice 70s-80s horror/conspiracy/sci-fi feel to the story and the fighting is good fun. It crashes a bit and the loading is slow but I guess this will be fixed if played on the PS5.

Diablo II is finally getting remastered. Hopefully it ends up better than that Warcraft 3 reforged remake although this is promising less (just upgraded visuals). Coming to consoles this year

They also announced a new class for Diablo 4 which is looking fantastic (ear trigger warning)

oh my demons. I didn't play the Warcraft remake but if they don't fiddle with mechanics surely they can't break this. not sure I'd want to play it on a console but then I've got no computer so...

Rogue is looking OK, love the rain of arrows skill. but where is my cute Necromancer? :(

if you have 45 minutes to spare. It seems like it’s just rebuilding the graphics and ironing out some issues but they’re keeping the gameplay intact.

One of my top tips is that you’re going to come up against quite a tough boss battle very early on and really you just need to stick with it. I’ve never really played a game like that before where you’re thrown in at the deep end with something that felt so unbeatable so early on and honestly it nearly put me off but learn to dodge and attack and you’ll be fine :)

*waits for RoM to tell me it was a piece of piss*

I'm into God of War now (keep wishing it was soundtracked by the Scherzinger song of the same name and amusing myself greatly at the thought of big manly Kratos fighting to it but anyway..) and yeah, it's tough as tits.

I'm on the "Give me a challenge" setting (not the highest, second one down) thinking I could lower it if need be, because it started out NAUSEATINGLY HARD. But gradually it evens out as your skills grow although I'm still early-ish days.

Love love love though. Enough exploration to keep me happy but with clear paths so I know it's not going to take longer than the average dog's life like The Witcher/Skyrim. Beautiful worlds, lots of lore and engaging, surprisingly funny dialogue, and huge variety to gameplay, who knew there were so many things to do with an axe?!

What was the boss, the tattooed bloke who turns up claiming to be invincible? It definitely took me a few attempts and there's been nothing like it since! I did think I'd have to change the settings after that one, it literally gives you final boss vibes rather than an intro :D

The first troll wasn't so bad because you had Atreus. I struggled most with the big battle against respawning draugr things near the start, took me about 20 goes!

@Raining On Me Oh I was meaning the Troll when you go exploring at the start :D I couldn’t get my head around needing to actually dodge something and any attacks on him being such a light touch.

Glad you’re enjoying it though and like you say it’s a great mix of exploration and defined paths. I really went for it with the end game. It’s so satisfying to play I didn’t mind being on a collect-a-thon.

But the real question is who do you want you in you more? The Stranger or Kratos?

I’m addicted to Slay the Spire. I got it on my phone and haven’t bothered with my PS4 since.

I’ve been playing the Avengers game for weeks. It’s actually really good fun, it just feels like it needs to be expanded.

I would like to play this after they release all the extra heroes and fix the game and it’s either free or costs $20.

I got it for £20 from Sainsbury's. Every week before and since, it's been £49, which leads me to believe they put the wrong sticker on.

The roster's okay and every character has a distinct playstyle with a lot of customisations available, but it needs to be fuller. Black Panther, Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel should be in it at the very least, not to mention a few more from beyond the MCU.

I think they just announced a Black Panther expansion coming out this year.

Now I've completed AC Origins I wanted a break from AC games, so have gone into the past to start Watch Dogs 2. Apparently the new one isn't fun.

I saw that a remaster of AC 3 goes for nothing at the moment. I haven't played it – is it good?

I'm tempted to get Ghost of Tsushima given the amazing reviews. Has anyone played?

no it's still too expensive for a Scrooge like me (so I've made a reservation for it at the library). it's probably the game I want to play the most at the moment!

I have it. It's great fun, and plays almost like you imagine Assassin's Creed should play. The gameplay felt a bit repetitive by the time I was close to the end but I'd definitely recommend it.
